I read this book in two sittings. I loved it! All about a woman and Mother in Germany during world war two who worked at the city zoo. She has two children a young boy and a teenage daughter. Her husband is away and fighting in the war. She loves her children and all the animals at the zoo espcially an elephant called "Marlene" (named after Marlene Dietrich) I won't tell you the whole story, but an elephant of four yeaars old is saved by this woman and brought home to their garden. When the bombing of the war hits there city they go on the road with the elephant fleeing the city....there journey is very gripping. The story all told from an old woman in a nursing home who is the daughter. It is well worth the read.

Terry Pratchett's Discworld novels were some of the first books that I ever read as a teenager so he holds a special place in my youth. The man just has an extraordinary way with words and Good Omens is no exception. It's a hilarious satire about that eternal battle of Good and Evil with a strong Britishness about it that I just adored. The characters are strange and wonderful and I found it easy to get completely lost in the story. One of the funniest books I've read in a long time.

Well I have decided that I just love this author's writing!! He is not always easy to read both in terms of content and style. But I cannot put down his books -- and am anxiously looking forward to reading "The English Patient" -- although I have seen the movie. However, I just get carried away with the words and poetry in the words -- sometimes to the point of losing track of the plot! Then I have to go back and read a portion of it for content -- which is still a wonderful experience. His descriptions of people are moving -- he captures the vulnerability, sadness, cruelty and losses experienced by the various characters, and their flaws of character and those born of their experiences. I was intrigued by the title "Divisadero" -- which is the name of a street one of the families lived on -- but he carries the theme throughout the book -- demonstrating divisions in families, between people and in communities -- the insider versus the outsider. I think I may re-read this at some point -- just to have the joy of reading it again -- and to gain more insights into what he is writing about.

Sort of a gothic type saga/romance with a bit of mystery. Enjoyable!

Fans of "Repo Man, The Opera" may enjoy this. Interestingly, the word "android" is unmentioned in this novel...
