I spent some time really trying to think of how to best start the writing of this review and the best that I could come up with is "It is a beautifully written love story". And really, that is just what it is. Straight forward. Murakami, again, shows that he can write perfect sentences that just flow from one to the next but for a plot and story circumstances that are not incredibly complicated, it was a very beautiful love story. I found that I was very moved. I cried due to how heavy some parts of the story were and I had a few moments of sulking after I put the book down. Which may sound silly because that means I was sulking over something that is not real--fictional story and fictional characters, and I'm sure that the dramatic Josh Groban music playing in the background didn't help that at all, but regardless, empathy was not an issue in this novel. The characters were not superfluous and every character had their own purpose and was fully developed which I appreciated because there was not a surplus of people that I had to keep track of. The main character, Toru Watanabe, and his devotion to the girl he loves, Naoko, was endearing to read about and that ability to give yourself 100 percent to a person, that Murakami gives Watanabe, is a strong driving element in the novel. There is no doubt that the people he keeps in his life, although few, mean everything to him and the point at which Watanabe himself realizes that fact was a nice moment of self awareness. A common theme that runs through the novel is loss. Most, if not all, of the characters have experienced loss in one way shape or form and each character is defined by how they deal with it. After the death of Kizuki (Toru's best friend and Naoko's boyfriend) both Toru's and Naoko's worlds change and as the reader you can feel the struggle involved in both of them taking the respective paths that they chose to take. Which brings me to what I loved most about the novel. Love is such a huge concept and I don't know that there is an answer to the question of what love is but I think in this novel Murakami does a good job in dealing with such a big entity. He has taken a concept that is subjective and different for each person and has described "love" in such a way that he made it something tangible. And throughout all of the loss and sad undertones, Norwegian Wood was ultimately a novel that told a love story that perfectly wove together loss as well as hope.
