Chronological account of civil rights in America. Anyone who has "decided to give a shit" has much to gain from this book...

I like what she had to say about food. I thought it was unfortunate that she missed the fact that all of this does connect to the Lord. But understanding our bodies and not looking merely at weight, bmi or clothing size is an important and that seemed to be a lot of what this book is about. I started to read and the first few chapters didn't have me sold. I wasn't sure where she was going with the book, or if I was even interested enough to continue along. But I had read some good reviews on sparkpeople.com and figured I'd give it a bit more time. The last section of the book is definitely worth the read (could you skip the first two parts? Maybe).

Very fun to read. I kinda want a cute daemon following me around now.

The drug dealer can only sell drugs. The hustler can sell anything The subtitle, The Rise, Fall, and Rise again of JM Benjamin and Randy Kearse, was a perfect summary of the book. I applaud these two authors for putting their story out there in hopes of keeping young children from making the same mistakes they did. I really enjoyed that they included pictures for the readers to get a glimpse into their lives. While their struggles were the same they were different at the same time. Both give credit to those whom were in their corner the entire time - their Mothers. What I found the most interesting was they both came in “the game” with their brother in tow. I think if this book falls in the right hands I truly believe that the holder will be encouraged and hopefully not go down the same road as countless others. Both the authors speak of wanting a change and making their mothers proud. They both on go on to explain their rock bottom and what gave them the strength to change. Their struggle to get out the game is common. They shared a common interest after meeting in prison and that was writing. They both have proved that you can beat the odds and beat the statistics and live successful lives after prison. The biggest draw back for me was the overkill of interviews. I know they are both proud as they should be of their achievements; it made for a redundant read as the interviews just echo each other. In addition, the editing needs some work as there were lots of missing words, etc. I like their own words and love the fact that neither one placed blame on no one but them selves for the time they spent in prison. I love all the outreach these two do in hopes of making a change in someone else’s life. I recommend this book to give to anyone you see going down a path of destruction. I read this entire series at the beginning of 2011, and at first I thought the series was surprisingly well written and transcended its genre. I was disheartened to find out how contrived the ending was for ALL the characters. Endings don't need to be tidy, but character growth and change is essential to any good novel... and while it seems to be building in the other novels, it all but disappears in the end of the series, making the others pointless. (There is ZERO character growth if you can take the first chapters of a series, erase everything in the middle, and end up right where you would have guessed if you had only read the first chapters––making all the interesting plot twists pointless.) It was lazy. She sold lots of books based on the first three, got offered a book deal on a new series... got invested in the next series and wrote a lazy ending to this one. Almost a year after starting the series (and after the investment of my time and money), I am still bothered that such a potentially good series was absolutely ruined for myself and other readers out there. Even more bothersome is that I recommended this series to others before it stalled out at the end. Oh, and the writer seems to have some kind of hatred for men because all the male characters are put through absolute hell and get no reward for it.

When I finished this book, I felt such a sense of accomplishment. I gave it 5 stars, perhaps mostly for the good feeling it gave me to conquer this book. I loved the peace parts, and found most of the war boring. I guess that says more about me than the book though.

"Scrotum-tightening sea" ??? Yes! On the one hand I like how Joyce gets super aggro with the word construction and general linguistic weirdness. On the other hand, I am clearly not man enough to get through this book even with on-line cliff's notes to help me. I made it to the end of chapter three, and I'm unsure at this juncture as to whether I will ever actually pick this book up and complete it. I'm not ruling it out, but it doesn't look likely. In honor of its literary insurmountabilityishness, I have created a new bookshelf-tag.

The Lattimore translation is better, but the book is, nonetheless, amazing.

Curious irony: I falsely assumed this book to deal with instant/twitter-style messaging, but it was about how to control & read body language. Perhaps a useful topic, the misleading title just didn't yield what I expected.

To see the universe in a grain of a sand. To view the history of all mankind's travails and trials through one metaphor. Masterful.
