I just finished listening to this book and I didn't expect to like it as much as I did. I know she was very old by the time this was done with her great nephew I believe, and I was intrigued by her. I love her attitude that when something is done, that's it, move on. I also was impressed that she and Simone Beck were able to maintain their friendship after breaking off their collaboration. She is a wonderful example of someone who really grew into herself. I was trying to explain to my teenager who she was and why she was so important and this really made me appreciate her more. I have one of her cookbooks here at home, and I had to pick it up while listening to the story. It's not how we cook now. But I think how we cook now is totally because of her. I am glad that she did this book before she died, she was a fascinating woman and her story is important.

one of my favorite books of all time...wilde is tremendous the way he molds social commentary and wit, character development, and a suspensful plot together is sheer joy...read it too many times, and need to read some more wilde

I don't know how much a review counts if I know the guy, but this was an enjoyable read. What I could use more of is analysis/explanation of some of the topics (why is a cover great? what's compelling about a storyline?). For a non-comics guy, it would have been helpful to know exactly what Adam's talking about, but I suspect that for his target audience, that's probably not much of an issue.

Well, it seems that everyone either loves it or hates it. First of all, this author takes so bloody long to write her books I forget they exist and only read the next one if I happen to stumble upon it in the new books section at the library, which is how I found this one. And of course as a side effect of those long writing periods, I can't remember who the characters are or what the many different plot lines were for the various characters in the previous. Story is pretty good, if you like the previous stories you should like this one. It really gets long at points. I found myself skimming. You know the final Harry Potter, like 800 pages that could have been told in 300 and you wouldn't have missed anything, yeah, this is like that. It's a good story, but really really dragged out. I don't really know what the rape scene is that people object to. Sort of a spoiler but if you've read many reviews you're getting it by now - King Zachary almost gets killed and a death-bed wedding is maneuvered between him and Estora. As part of traditional ritual, the consummation of the marriage has to be witnessed, though he's unconscious, and he and she are given some aphrodisiac elixir to make sure they both do their part. Nasty, yes. Rape? Not so sure. My two big frustrations 1 - Again, that whole take years and years to write the next book and surprise, this is not the last book thing. 2 - The whole relationship between Zachary and Kristen is just frustrating. He is now married and Estora is a really good person. Her love is dead so there's no one for her to switch off two if that could somehow be weirdly arranged. Even with Kristen's time travel abilities, it will take some seriously good writing to end this in a way that is believable and likeable, and somehow I just don't see that happening. However, as I may not even remember that there is another book to read by the time it comes out years from now, it may be a moot point anyway!

I always feel this way about short story collections--simply, there are stories I like and others that I don't. With regards to Murakami's short stories though, I almost always have a good opinion of them :) My favorites here were Aeroplane, Tony Takitani, Chance Traveler, and The Kidney-Shaped Stone. They are trademark Murakami, and feature, as always, rather remarkable women. It's interesting to note that the collection also includes "Firefly", an excerpt from his novel Norwegian Wood, and "Man-Eating Cats", which would later evolve into Sputnik Sweetheart.
I love to read historial fiction, but probably wouldn't have picked out this one on my own. (Read it for a book club.) I have never really given nuns and convents too much thought, but really enjoyed this book. The characters are very interesting, and the ending kept me guessing. The book is set in the 1500's in Italy, a young noble girl is placed in a convent against her will. Come to find out that this was a common practice because of high dowry prices.

Considering the way people rave about this, I think I missed something. Magical realism is all well and good, but the story didn't seem to add up to much.

I'm a huge fan of Chely Wright and I support her LikeMe Organization with monthly book proceed donations. I'm sure this book will touch many lives. She was honest and forthcoming in her story. Her story is an inspiration.
