This is a short children's book, but it's worth mentioning here for how much I really adored it as a child. The story of Scruffy, a good-for-nothing omega in a wolf pack, is beautifully coupled with photographs, captivating to any kid, and even parents. The story within is impossibly sweet.

This is a little different than the stories that I normally like to read but the author was able to keep my interest by very good descriptive writing. I received a first copy in a contest and am pleased to have read this book. Although he could be construed as a monster, Mackie makes you feel for him throughout the book with his human characteristics and suffering. I especially liked the underworld characters. I do think this book would make a very good movie if it was done with quality.

After slogging through 740 pgs of Tom Wolfe's renowned prose, I expected some sort of resolution; all I got was an ending. Wolfe succeeds in exposing the link between rhetoric and society, idiom and world-view. He dredges deep into the recesses of university life, exposing the seedy debauchery and rank favoritism shown toward "student" athletes, both of which I experienced first-hand at UW. However, it seems to me that he chose to paint a grim picture of the modern U. While it no doubt has serious flaws, such mainstream college experience remains a tremendous opportunity for self discovery in all of its forms, from intellectual stimulation to drug-induced reflection. An entertaining if not wholly insightful or stand-out read.
