I wish there were more writings by hadewijch of antwerp in this, but it covers a lot of ground... and the cover illustration ('christian allegory' by jan provost) is totally almost worth the price of the book alone.

Epic and cinematic and beautiful. Read the entire first segment at the baseball stadium--50 pages or so--to get an idea of how the description builds from moody and exacting to frigging orgiastic. The book follows different characters and scenes throughout, which aren't uniformly evocative. The last third in particular was a bit of a slog. All about the ambience.

Addicting and Intense. Following the rise of Tris, this story started rough around the edges with the gray scaled Beatrice who lives in a world of selfless acts. Her class, Abnegation lives by the ideals of selfless deeds, at the age of 16 she endures test to discover which of the fives classes to join. She makes the choice to become Tris, the Ruthless, Brave, and Fearless member of Dauntless. However after choosing this class now she must survive the initiation or risk becoming factionless outside the destroyed Chicago. The chapters end with cliffhangers forcing you to white knuckle one after another until dawn. Veronica Roth created something new with this Dystopic Thriller by creating a hardened character. Rather than Katinss from The Hunger Games, who is too broken and poor me to do anything for herself, Tris is cold, smart and dead set on her agenda. Divergent is a must read!

This was the first book I read by Hudock. And now I have to confess -- she is my new favorite writer. The characters in this story came alive for me, and the settings were beautifully handled. The Goblin Market was ghastly and horrific, while the fairy "town" was lovely and enchanting. The journey into the darkness and the romance that somehow thrived there . . . let me just say that the writing is beautiful and engaging. I'm on the lookout for any and everything I can find by this author.

Emotional. Powerful. Heart wrenching. Inspiring. If I Stay is such a beautifully written book that has brought more tears to my eyes than any other book that I have read in my life. And I don't mean the silent small trickle down my face kind of tears. I mean the full out crying, putting the book down to sob for a moment kind of tears. A huge chunk of this story is told through flashbacks. Within all of the flashbacks, you get to know this shy and incredibly talented girl and her intricate relationships with all the other characters, and the love that makes up who she is. The love she has for music, love for her boyfriend Adam, love for her one and only best friend Kim, and for her parents and family. And in between all of these flashbacks, we as well as Mia get to learn just how much all of those people love her back and how strong their desire for her to keep fighting to live is. How they would do just about anything to let her know that if she wakes up, she won't be alone and would still have a life worth living. Though this book does have an overall depressing tone, the flashbacks offer some light and beautiful moments filled with laughter, hope, and love. These memories are all part of Mia's struggle to decided if she should just let go or if she should stay. In my opinion, the most riveting part of this story was that Mia never really knew what her decision was going to be until the very moment that she made it. This amazing and deeply moving novel touched my heart and will forever have a special place there. It is also a fantastic reminder of all the things that make life worth living.

A beautiful book, full of atmosphere and resonances. For Borges fans, a welcome reminder. Denouement a bit predictable, but in the face of all that poetry, so what. N.B. I actually read this as "Der Schatten des Windes" - i.e. the German translation.

Leave it to me to not be able to finish a book with "very short" in the title. What I read was dense but good.

Sam and I just finished reading this book. Even though I'm a long time fan of science fiction and Orson Scott Card, I had never read this one. I'm not entirely sure what I think about it. I liked the book but it certainly is very dark. The idea of doing whatever it takes to be sure that you win a war--even using children like Ender--is extremely disturbing. Unfortunately the idea that such a thing could be done isn't farfetched or even unlikely.

It's funny what a re-read can do for a favorite book. For instance, I recall loving every instance of Jane Eyre, and I mostly did this time as well, but there were things that I just didn't remember, particularly the entire portion of the book that took place with the Rivers family. (St.John is an amazing look at an emotional abuser, especially for the time). Rochester also lost some of his allure, as I didn't remember him being so absolutely overwrought the first time around, but maybe that has more to do with how old *I* was, and not the character itself. (Things that are romantic at 19 are eye-roll-inducing at 31.) However, what remained constant, clear-eyed, and remarkable was Jane, and her voice. She still leaps off the page as one of the most fully realized characters in literature; particularly literature of the time. Her perspective is shockingly modern for when it was written, and I admired Bronte for allowing her heroine to be the aloof, clear-headed one, as her suitors flung themselves at her with hysterical ardor. This remains a favorite book, even though I'm a little sure about how the relationships are crafted. Jane Eyre remains one of the great characters of all time.
