Breo Alamancos breo_alamancos — The first book I read that turned me on to Tudor history was the Wives of Henry VIII by Antonia Fraser, back in 1992, when it was published and it has remained one of my favorites over the years. Therefore, any work regarding this subject matter is always compared to her piece. I am familiar with David Starkey as I am a fan of his Monarch series on DVD. Starkey is a respected English historian and quite frankly, knows his stuff. As mentioned in the foreword, most of his book is on Henry's first two wives, Catherine of Aragon and Anne Boleyn. Starkey has done significant work unearthing previous unpublished letters and documents to give an entire picture of that time, which could get tedious at times with explanations and timeline of events. There were almost 200 pages devoted to the obstructions of obtaining the first divorce. Although slow moving at times, it is obvious Starkey devoted much time to meticulous research. The only thing I was a little disappointed in was some of the vernacular used - I felt his editor could have done a better job.
