Nicely drawn characters, especially if you can avoid thinking of the actors cast in the film adaptation. (The movie is fun, too, but the book's Chili Palmer is less confident than Travolta; the book's Harry Zimm is more of a weasel than Hackman.) Enjoyable point-of-view swapping from chapter to chapter. Driven by a sort of comparison/contrast game between Hollywood and Mob-land, with complications arising where the comparisons end and the contrasts begin. A good, cotton-candy first read of summer.

Hempel may be my new favorite author of the short story. She's concise, to the point, and knows how to dig into human emotion. The stories are raw, honest, and hold nothing back. Plus, I may have a newfound appreciation for pets (as the majority of the stories feature dogs), which is saying a lot for someone who's not much of the "pet" person.

Loved this book from the beginning straight till the end. It was reminiscent of Mariana but with a different twist on it. Susanna Kearsley is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. I keep devouring her books like they're candy. This one struck a special cord though - I think everyone would like to believe there's a true story lurking somewhere in their "imagined" stories.

I read very few thrillers but Greg Illes is the best. I have read as many of his novels that I could get my hands on. He has a new one out but the wait list @ the library is very long. John Grisham & Jody Picoult are excellent too, although both of them seem repetitive after reading several. Sleep No More is intriguing & in fact I thought of it while reading The Season of the Witch. Arty, intelligent, real (you care about them) characters, intrigue, etc.
