I met John Michell a few times and liked him. A sort of elfin intellectual with a dash of mad professor. A kind and thoughtful man, very determined in pursuit of the answer to great puzzles. Some say that he was one of the real initiators of the whole Ancient Mysteries/New Age movement, and they must be right, surely, on the basis of View Over Atlantis alone (first published 1969). What strikes me now, reading the updated version of VoA, is how original and authentic a voice he had, how deeply serious and deeply interesting, even in a field now well-trodden. Part of the book gets a bit lost in a series of huge figures of the Great Pyramidical variety. As maybe he did himself, on occasion. But the first three chapters remain superb, and some of the Glastonbury stuff is extraordinary. A few people may have followed his column in Richard Ingram's 'Oldie' which ran for many years. I never read a bad one. John Michell died a couple of years ago, in his late 70s.

LOVED it. I just love it when you get lost in a book. From the moment you pick it up it comsumes you, as if you have literally jumped into the book & entered the world the author has created. This book, in fact this whole series, did that for me. When this occurs effortlessly, when you feel like you can almost smell the surroundings conjured up by your imagination, it is amazing!

So I picked this book up at the library last week for a fun read and it was just that. A totally light-hearted, fun read. It was super funny and cute, some loose morals but she didn't go into any details. I enjoyed it.

Max and the Flock have gone public, doing air shows and making TV appearances about the effects of global warming. But the School is making bigger and worse robots to attack them. Max's mom is kidnapped, so Max and the Flock set out to find her. They get onboard a naval submarine and try to find a laboratory owned by Mr. Chu underwater. Meanwhile, tension between Max and Fang grows, and Max finds she cares about him more than she originally thought. Max was a light, quick read, but a very enjoyable one. Max's voice is fun to read, and her personality is easy to relate with. Every character has an interesting, unique relationship with every other character, which is rare and not easy to do. I also love all the personalities of all the characters - they're all unique and feel very real to me. I recommend Max, but don't read it if you haven't already read the first four. I look forward to the next.

I like Teenie One Shot Harris for many reasons. His shots are fresh and lively giving a good look into black life in Pittsburgh in the 40's and 50's. He got his nickname from politicians for the way he'd come in and take one shot when other photographers were hammering out too many. Have to tip your hat to efficiency and confidence like that.

I have taken a long while to get round to this, it’s been in my reading pile for a couple of years. I very much enjoyed the first one but for some reason this kept being pushed to the back of the pile, along with the follow up which is also in there. Well that was my mistake, because this is good stuff. Following on from The Forgotten Legion (captured Legionaries being forced to fight for the Parthians) we find the soldiers far out to the East protecting the Parthian borders against the likes of the Scythians (nomadic tribesmen). The focus is on Romulus a Roman, Brennus a massive Gaul and Tarquinius a soothsayer. Mistrusted by their Parthian masters and some of their fellow Legionaries, the trio are desperate to get home and hope that Tarquinius visions will keep them alive and help them realise their destinies. Back in Rome, Romulus’s sister Fabiola is the lover of Brutus who is away in Gaul with Caesar at a time where violent gangs are running wild in Rome and the Roman empire itself is on the edge of anarchy. The best historical fiction does not just place characters in an era, but involves them in significant events of the time and has peripheral characters we will recognise. Ben Kane has done the research to provide a real and vibrant background to his story. The balance of the battles out in the East and the politics of Rome is an interesting one and although on one or two occasions the author does build up an interest in characters, only to then discard them, the story remains interesting and unpredictable. I enjoyed it this is a good follow up to The Forgotten Legion and Ben Kane continues to be an author to watch.

Originally posted at: http://whippedcream2.blogspot.com/201... This book hooked me in the first few pages and and I did not want to put it down! It is a definite keeper. Dee Crawford is returning home to Delaney’s Farm after a five year absence. "Home" is really Jacob’s home. Jacob was the man she loved and the man she wanted to marry until he died unexpectedly and left her to deal with his death and with the hatred and guilt of his brother Abe. Abe Delaney loved his brother but desired his brother’s fiancée even more. Their slight indiscretion before learning of Jacob’s death drove him to resent Dee and hate himself even more. In his infinite wisdom, Jacob bequeathed his share of the farm to Dee and now she is back to become a part of its heritage and a business partner to Abe. What Abe does not know is that Jacob had a secret, a secret that only Dee and one other person know. Now that other person is out to silence Dee permanently. Life on the farm is about to get interesting, very interesting and very hot. You see, Abe just can’t seem to keep his hands off Dee and she can't say no to Abe. Abe is the ultimate sexy cowboy, strong, arrogant, handsome and combative to everyone. He carries his guilt on his sleeve. It is his own punishment for what he feels was the ultimate unforgivable moment of his life. But when Dee becomes the target of a dangerous stalker, her safety is tantamount to anything else because he cannot imagine his life without her. Dee is strong, resourceful, beautiful and completely in love with Abe. This is a case of love being bigger than both of them. Their moments of passion are unexpected and very heated but often followed by regret. Rhonda Lee Carver gets you here and keeps you where you want this to work for them and you envision their happily ever after to go on for decades. The epilogue pulls together all the loose ends, but even so I wanted more time with Abe and Dee. This is such a great story with wonderful characters and dialogue, creative narrative and detailed descriptions of life on the farm. So grab a comfortable chair, a drink or maybe dinner because once you open this book you'll want to stay there until the very happy end.
