Aside from the ending that felt strangely abrupt....this was a great historical fiction! I knew almost nothing about Stalin's annexing of Lithuania (and Latvia, Estonia...) at the start of WWII. I can't get over how much suffering was inflicted on the world during this terrible decade. I loved the historical notes at the end. It wasn't until the 90's (when Lithuania became its own country again) that those exiled to Siberia were able to finally tell their stories without fear of being sent back to Siberia. Sad!! This is a YA book, and it's super clean, but it is a heavy topic and doesn't shy away from how soldiers took advantage of women.

I am far from being a mom to be, but I could definitely gain a better perspective of being a mom. The routine chores of motherhood can sometimes be tiresome, so the chance to solve a murder mystery for Kate definitely added some much needed change in Kate's life. I liked the book, and there were a couple of times where I giggled out loud!

Best book of the series by far! I love Kate and Curran. They have some CRAZY sexual tension going on and they need to do something about it soon before I go crazy. I love that even though the books in this series are short they are packed full of excitement and I never feel like there is a dull moment from start to finish. If I could give more then five stars I would because it was that good!

Molly has been working as a scullery maid at Dethemere Castle since the tender age of seven. With a sickly mother and harsh, uncaring dad, she grows up like a wild urchin on the streets. It isn't until she has a disturbing vision of the future and arouses their neighbors' suspicions that her father finally remembers to send her off packing. The hustle and bustle of a medieval city, including dirt and disease almost make this book feel like historical fiction. It's just a few touches of magic which carry the story into fantasy. While at the castle, she befriends Tobias, aka "Donkey Boy." Molly gradually settles into a comfortable routine at the castle, but when she's promoted to help polish the silver, she finds one particularly grand silver bowl seems to act as a focus for her visions. Alaric, the spoiled prince, is caught up in a dangerous plot to remove his family from the throne and Molly and Tobias find themselves on a grand adventure to protect him. Molly is practical and smart - despite her poverty, the early death of her mother and the long hours of hard work she endures at such a young age, she never really complains. While marketed as YA this book has more of a middle-grade feel.

Re-read of another edition, rated more highly, 27/1/15: Frankly, I was too young to really appreciate this book when I first read it. I realise that now. It's often said that die-hard fans of The Lord of the Rings will find much to enjoy in The Silmarillion. I'm not sure that's true. They might but equally they might not - they're two very different styles of book, as different from each other as The Hobbit is from either. This is The Greek Myths and The Golden Fleece to The Lord of the Rings's The Iliad and The Odyssey . The scope and ambition of this work of fiction is breathtaking, as J.R.R. Tolkien seeks to create the mythology of an entire world. That means beginning with its creation - not of Middle Earth, which is just the part featured in those earlier novels, but of an entire planet. With a world formed and a pantheon established heroes are introduced and their exploits sketched. These do, then, provide some context and depth to the more widely read of Tolkien's fiction even if the differing style means that those who enjoy one will not necessarily enjoy the other. This is a masterclass in creating a fictional universe and goes some way to explaining just why the author's many imitators have fallen short of his success. Tolkien's use of Germanic and Celtic myth in his world is no secret but his scholarship is greater even than that and it's hard to believe that anyone but a professor of Mediaeval Literature would have had the patience and breadth of knowledge to execute such a plan. The heroic cycles here are reminiscent of The Song of Roland, Beowulf and the Edda. Those that enjoy high fantasy and quest tales might not like this, conversely, those that enjoy ancient myths might well find much they like here.

This wasn't as good as Little Children, but I still like his way of writing. So realistic. I think a lot of college students/grads who have no direction would relate to this book a lot.

Regardless, this book was enjoyable and provided insight into aspects of Indian culture which proved particularly relevant. Days after finishing this book, one of my Indian students announced she was getting married (arranged marriage).
