Armageddon has hit the small desert town of Rockwood and all that stands in its way is a weary vampire named Earl, a hardened werewolf named Duke and Loretta, the formidable owner of Gil's, who refuses to back down even when faced with an army of zombies. Recommended for readers who will appreciate a mashup of humor, horror and fantasy.

Fantastic, thought provoking book. I went out and bought the DVD as soon as i'd finished reading it.

Last time I read this book, I was sixteen. I found that it was a completely different experience this time through.

I read this because it is a popular work by two very big names (Keeney and Raiffa) in my own technical field, decision analysis. Since I often have to explain technical ideas for a general audience and recommend courses of action to non-specialists, I wanted to see how K&R do that. So I thought it a great little book, and recommend it highly, except for one curious lapse. It recommends eliciting utility functions without using reference lotteries. Since utility functions capture attitude toward risk, my understanding and belief is that they cannot properly be elicited without explcitly considering chance events, i.e. lotteries. If this is not an inexplicable goof, then I'd have to say that it is a conscious simplification, motivated by the tedious difficulty of elicitation with reference lotteries. In fact, I usually recommend assuming risk neutrality and skipping the lotteries, at least for the first pass through a problem, unless risk is the primary source of difficulty in the problem (as it often is in petrochemicals and pharmaceuticals). Other than that, I thought this was a fine book.

So dated. But so essential. Not a book to read, but a book from which to create experiences, guided by someone who knows the model.

Really enjoyed this. There were parts of the book that I remember seeing on history shows, but most of the book was very new to me. I learned a lot about the personalities of Churchill and Roosevelt. It was very interesting that they were able to work together even though they both were used to being the Alpha-Males in their countries and they had very different personalities and moral values.

more of an easy, entertaining read (with some grounding in sociological theory) than an academic book, but it did win an award in cultural sociology. recommended if you're interested in some of the "behind-the-scenes" of tv talk shows and their selection of participants.

This is a book for Book lovers everywhere! The plot sucks you in and doesn't let go until the end. Twists and gentle turns take you through the story of lives colliding with unforseen consequences to create an amazing tapestry.

Lesser-known Ellroy book compared to biggies like L.A. Confidential and The Black Dahlia, but it's still a great read. I'm definetely going to seek out "Blood on the Moon" next.
Even though this book takes place in the fictional town of Manifest, Kansas, it reminds me of southern fiction with it's warmth, humor and eccentric characters. If you can get past the slow moving plot, the ending is well worth the effort.
