Short stories that are never flashy, but reward close reading. Taken all at once, similarities in theme jumped out a little strongly - I might have preferred to encounter them in smaller doses. Still, some of them were strangely compelling, while others didn't quite sink in. So many of them were told in the first person that, reading them in a row, I started to think of the narrators as one person. Some of them deserve a reread.

everything of James Baldwin's that I've read is amazing, this book's no exception.

I remember reading this book for class, and it was okay, but never struck me as a great book...I was pretty unimpressed.

This book just didn't grab me. Not a good balance between description or scene-setting and dialogue. I just couldn't feel that I should care about these characters.

Enjoyable autobiography. She is likeable and her story is a good one. Makes me want to read more bios.

I wanted to love this book. And I did love the first 100 pages or so. But it was just too many stories woven together in a way that made it work to follow.

I really liked the book. She had trials in her life but the author didn't dwell on the negative. Her aunt Sissy was a hoot!

I found this to be a real page-turner, excellently written and engrossing. At first I thought, oh it's another book about World War II and living with Nazis and I'm sure there's not much that will make it stand out. Was I wrong. The book is expertly paced, the plot points are intriguing, the characters are vividly real, and the ending is uplifting in an odd sort of way--not the happy-go-lucky, all's well ending, but a resolution is reached that makes you feel better for the mother and daughter who are at the heart of this book. There are some truly harrowing and gruesome scenes that make you realize just how desperate daily life was for ordinary Germans living through the Third Reich and the final days of World War II. Because of the very fact that so many of the characters are ordinary people, it makes it easy to put yourself in their situations. Many times I found myself wondering what I would have done. There were no easy answers to these questions. An excellent story, easy to lose yourself in.
