This book is an effort by two LDS historians to write a comprehensive history of the church that could be used as a college text or for those interested in a one volume study of the church. It is somewhat dated having been written in the 1970's or 80's. I really enjoyed it because although it was an academic study they included lots of anecdotes from journals and personal histories to illustrate the topics being discussed. Although there wasn't a lot of new information, they organized the book around themes and not just a straight chronological history. The themes covered topics like the 19th century ward and women in the church. The authors were both professional historians and tried to maintain an evenhanded approach in addressing the issues while using their church membership to provide insights that non-members might not have. I would recommend it for someone interested in an a basic retelling of church history from an academic perspective.

Pretty solid sequel. I enjoyed Bad Bird. I loved Jackie’s character. She is an intelligent, messy, pot smoking attorney who isn’t afraid to tell it like it is. She is independent, yet knows when to rely on her friends for help. The secondary characters are equally as interesting, especially her boyfriend, Harry. I think we would all want someone like Harry in our life. While she has relationship issues, he is happy to take her anyway he can get her. The relationship in this is pretty subtle and secondary to the plot. The mystery was interesting with a real twist at the end that I didn’t see coming. I like to be surprised when I read mysteries and this one didn’t disappoint.

Another excellent Flavia book. This time a gypsy is attacked on Buckshaw grounds and later a thief is found dead nearby. I like the writing style. The mystery and how Flavia figures things out is interesting and fun, but i enjoy just as much all the writing details and extraneous stuff. Obviously an 11 year old Flavia couldn't possibly be what she is, but still fun. Read to 13 year old Annika. She loves Flavia too.

I listened to the CD version and loved it. The 4 actors used multiple voices for the characters. It was most entertaining. I found the making of the tapestries interesting as I had never thought of why or how they were made.

These books aren't very substantial, but they're fun. Light romance and girl friendships.

There are some great parts of this book, like the 193os description from the Daily News about why young Jewish men made up a disproportionate amount of pickup basketball enthusiasts: "It places a premium on the alert, scheming mind ... flashy trickiness, artful dodging, and general smart aleckness, [traits naturally appealing] to the Hebrew with his Oriental background." The individual stories of playground legends are also well done, but there are only so many wistful mini-biographies one can read about how guys with great potential couldn't quite make it to the big time. If this book were a movie featuring the above quote, several of these stories, mid 1990s rap music, and a lot of video of street basketball, it would have been great. Instead, it was enjoyable but slightly unsatisfying. Pickup basketball fans might also enjoy: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/...

This book felt like a repeat of all the other bad vampire books I've read mashed up into one. First of all I felt like ALL of the characters were total strangers to me. In every good book I have read, I've felt like I knew the characters and in the really good books I felt like I could just be another character in story. For example Vampire Academy. In this book all I remember about Zoey's friends/ enemies is that Damien was gay, Erik was hot and used to date Aphrodite, Aphrodite was a meanie jerk-faced (insert your swear word here) that was Zoey's competition, Erin and Shonelle (whatever her name was) were "twins" and finished each others' sentences, and Stevie-Rae was a really annoying country girl that was scared of everything. Can you say pathetic? Zoey is a wimpy girl with issues and she can see ghosts so she has weird tattoos Also, I hated the -how do I put it- language of the book. OVERUSE OF CERTAIN WORDS/ PHRASES. How many times can you say "twin" before the reader gets EXTREMELY annoyed. AND you can't "hear yourself say" everything. Take control of your words for crying out loud! The reason that I continued reading was because I think that Damien was awesome and hilarious, and the other reason was because the main idea of the book was good, only if it had a different person writing it or editor or whoever messed up the entire main idea of the story. Finally, I am sad that I spent $4.99 to get this book permanently etched into my kindle. If you want a GOOD vampire book, don't waist your time on this.

The first time I read this book I was infatuated with it. I devoured the story--mesmerized by the world unfolding and awed by the writing talent of Neil Gaiman. During this, my second read, I found myself once again tearing through the pages. I couldn't have been more absorbed by this book than if I'd swallowed it. I bestow upon it a second set of 5 stars.
