Chick lit. It had been quite a few months since I had read that type of book. I usually go thru these in one sitting. No change with this one. It's an enjoyable romp but it's like eating cotton candy, lots of air and sugar. Jacqueline, 39, newly divorced, with 2 kids, her ex dating, living with a 20 years old. All the clichés and conventions of romance novel under the guise of serious chick lit. Jacky goes to Hawaii for a week's vacation alone (because the married girlfriend cancels at the very last minute), meets gorgeous surf instructor, has fling with said gorgeous boy toy. After that... it's goes the way of cheesy romance novels. Fun and light reading.

I read this book in the first year of my undergraduate engineering course. I read it because I was trying to read some 'tough' books because I felt I did not 'make the cut' intellectually. Anyway, I was told this book was about philosophy, but I found the philosophical content quite infantile and absurd. What I really found fascinating was the first-person narrative technique, coupled with an unreliable narrator. The story of a man who is exploring his alter-ego through his writings, and at the same time going on a motorcycle journey to get in touch with his estranged teenage son is what I really found more interesting. The stuff about Quality and Zen was, IMHO, just good scenery and props. Dunno what the other reviews say here, I always get shocked looks from friends when I say this to them ;-).

I absolutely loved this. There are so many wonderful characters to know and love (and not love) as they make their journey with the cattle. I loved Gus and the way he dealt with issues and especially Call, who is utterly frustrating at times. Doesn't take long for these characters to come to life and make you believe you are there on the plains with them.

This book was awesome. Loved all the different turn of events, and I was so happy Claire went back....I was so emotional through certain parts that I would become choked up and sad. Had many a late nights reading this book, and i can't wait till start the next one.

Fascinating true-crime saga of larceny within the rare book business, in a case where the author herself nearly gets drawn into the action. This is the story of a book thief (John Gilkey) who specializes in preying on dealers in first editions and historical documents. Gilkey gave the author nearly unlimited access, resulting in a unique picture of this particular sociopath collector's obsessive mindset and actions. After the book is over, both the author and the reader are still left wanting for a solid resolution - but that is, in itself, true to Gilkey's life. As the author says, "The story never ends."

Now, I'm a huge fan of John Green and his brother Hank's youtube videos, but I tried not to let that influence me when I read this book. Frankly, I didn't like most of John's books as much as I thought I would. However this one surprised me. The story is about a Quention, a high schooler who's always had a crush on Margo, an unatainable popular girl that abandoned him as a friend when they were kids. Yet all of the sudden Margo appears at his window asking for his assitence in a prank she's pulling on her ex-boyfriend and ex-friend, and Quention, thinking this is his chance to talk to the girl of his dreams, says yes. They prank a few people, have a couple of deep conversations, break into an amusement park, go on a date, and dance with each other. And then the next day, Margo's gone. Completely dissapeared. Her parents wash their hands of her, but Quention thinks she must have left him clues and is determined to figure out what really happened. At the start it grips you and does not let go. Sure it has some slow moments, but for the most part the book keeps you totally focused on piecing together this mystery. And the ending could not have pleased me more. I won't give it away, but lets just say the particular cover of this book suits it perfectly.

I actually got to meet the author of this book. I read this book in 8th grade and my school was able to raise money to have Elie come out and speak to everyone who had read the book. It really hit me when I met him because I was actually sitting in front of someone who had survived the Holocaust; I think I thought of the book almost as fiction because the stories seemed so unreal, but seeing him talk about his book was such a memorable experience and incredibly sad at the same time.
