The last in a series with which I was totally unfamiliar...in "mystery" novels I care much less about who killed Roger Ackroyd and why, but rather how interesting the protagonist is, and Mankell provides one worth investigating...

Entertaining for an airplane ride, but dumb, dumb, dumb.

Very good book. Read #4 in the Mickey series before going back to #1. Very suspenseful.

Absolutely gripping. Having read Legend of a Suicide I anticipated what I was letting myself in for, so I wasn't surprised at the ending, which is very grim. Despite its bleakness this is a beautiful book, full of amazing descriptions of water, shore and forest. The only irritation I found was the lack of definition between speech and internal thought. No speech marks sometimes made it difficult to know what was actually said aloud. Highly recommended, but brace yourself.

One of my favorites from childhood. This is a very short read, but moving and emotional, especially the last few chapters.

For most of the book I had decided I didn't like it, but the last part and especially the last few pages changed my mind. “This is how the entire course of a life can be changed: by doing nothing.” “All she had needed was the certainty of his love, and his reassurance that there was no hurry when a lifetime lay ahead of them.”

This was such a fun, inspiring, and great book. He draws fun pictures, and has a great sense of humor as he writes about his thru hike on the Appalachian Trail. Definitely a must read!

A great sense of theme with a subtle humour. A tedious read at times due to the attention on detail but it is all necessary and it doesn't bog the pace of the action down too much. The concept is genuinely intriguing and the narrative execution is brilliantly paced and concise. A fantastic read.

I think I read this the summer before my senior year of high school...some time around then... So, I just read it again (11/09), and now, being older, I see quite clearly how a few themes explored in the book are relevant to Western society in this day and age. I think I could have done without such extended passages from Goldstein's "book," though I was surprised that I didn't mind the 30+ pages or so of the account of his "ordeal" at the end of the book [don't want to give too much away!:]...

Jason wakes up on a bus sitting next to Piper and Leo, his two best friends. Unfortunately he doesn't remember them or anything else. As the three learn of their status as demigods, small bits of memory return to Jason. For some reason he refers to the gods by their Roman names and speaks Latin, not Greek. This is troubling to him and others, but they put it aside as the three new heroes head out on a quest to free Hera, rescue Piper's dad, and hopefully help Jason o regain his memory. In this opener to Riordan's Heroes of Olypmus series readers can expect the same mix of mythology, action, and humor as in the Percy Jackson series. The big difference, more romantic tension.
