You can check out this review and many others on my blog, The Reader's Antidote I'm surprised how much I loved Frost. It was creepy and chilling, but not so much that I needed to stop reading. The romance was sweet but mostly subtle, and had its moments where it got a little steamy. The F word was used a couple times, so this novel is not for the younger readers. Over all, I enjoyed it. I'm not a big ghost story person, because anything remotely creepy freaks me out. The first time I saw Zombieland, I was jumpy for the rest of the night. Celeste really bothered me. She's one of those crazy drugged-out goth girls that you avoid in school. You don't mean to, but they just throw off these vibes that make you want to run the other way. But then it turns out she has a hot overprotective brother, that's nothing remotely like her. If only that happened in real life. I loved how the author left it open. Was it the maintenance problem with the Frost House, or had it been something else, something much more sinister. The owl gave me the heebee-jeebees. Those wooden owls with the golden glass eyes have always creeped me out, but seeing what big of a role it played in this one... The next time I see one of these will be too soon. Last night was the first time in a while where I had the covers partially covering my head. Yeah, I admit it! Leena and David were sweet. She started out with this whole moratorium thing where she wasn't going to date this semester. But when you're thrown together like that, there's not much you can do to stop it from happening. Especially when both are unconsciously willing. The middle of the book was my favorite, when they were spending time together in NY and before all the really bad stuff started happening. The scenes where they were together (any time they were together), it gave me little happy squirms in my stomach. My only issue was how abrupt the ending was. Leena's pill addiction was slowly building, I'll give you that, and Frost House was slowly but surely sinking its claws into Leena's mind. But all of a sudden everything happened at once... and then there was no falling action. It just... ended. Maybe I'm asking for too much; maybe I needed more closure. But often it's never enough, when it's a stand-alone novel. Definitely pick this one up. Even if you're not into ghost stories and hauntings (which, believe me, I am not), it's a good read and the house actually sounds like a place I would live. Without the ghosties of course.

The first 800 pages were fantastically engaging and I plowed through them in less time than it normally takes me to read several books. Caesar's assination, as described, was quite underwhelming, but Cleopatra's agony at Antony's death more than makes up for it. The last 160 were quite a slog, and the descriptions of Antony's doldrums following the seige of Actium, especially when read in the heat of summer, were truly grueling. I learned that stealing from my mom is a good thing, else I never would have come by this on-the-whole-delightful brick.

This is about a Special Educator who gets a severe to profound Emotional and Behavior disorder classroom, and the students she works with. It is a true story, and the students are so interesting and the things they get themselves into is heart wrenching, as well as so captivating. I had to read it for school, but really enjoyed it while I read it. I will most likely read more of her books.

Good fun historical fiction about turn of the century chicago. Good for history buffs, architecture buffs, serial killer buffs.

Pity one can't give a 0 stars rating to a book and have it register. I couldn't even finish this one - taking it back to the library after reading fewer than 50 pages. It looks like the elder Mr. Francis has given over writing duties completely to his son. I knew from the first page (no exaggeration) that they weren't his words any more. Pulled one of his earlier books from my shelf and compared its first page with the leaden prose of the opening paragraphs of "Silks" - not even close. What a disappointment. Oh, well - several years ago, after the death of his wife Mary (who was apparently his uncredited co-author for all those years), I thought there would be no more stories from Dick. With his revival of Sid Halley for "Under Orders" I was happy to see him back with a new book, even tho' it wasn't quite up to his usual standard - and even the next one, the first to come out under the names of both him and his son, wasn't bad. I don't really see myself bothering with their future books. Such a shame. Hopefully their publisher will let the old man's quality work remain in our memories and not drag it down by putting out any more crap like this.

** spoiler alert ** Who doesn't want to read research on success? Gladwell describes what schools, educators and business don't want you to know about what it takes to be a success. My favorite is the 10,000 hour premise. I can see that this is true especially with things I am fairly good at like playing Scrabble. My husband couldn't put this down, I couldn't put this down either. A friend of mine was hired by Skadden, Arps law firm years back and I knew she was number one in her graduating class at Loyola, but I didn't understand what it meant to be hired by them like I do now after reading about their founding. You will love the section on "Gifted" students and how one just needs to be good enough because after that everything academic levels out. I do think that Gladwell looses his outliers premise in the second half of the book with the Korean Air section, etc. and (as he did in his other Books) in his "family" section. It didn't stop my enjoyment. When I read the introduction about Roseto, I saw how far my life is from this quintessential town. Essentially I learned that no one makes it in life by "accident."
