Story: Beatrice, a UK expat living in NYC, gets a call from her mother saying that Beatrice's sister Tess has disappeared. Beatrice goes back to a winter-clad London and starts trying to figure out where her sister might have gone. Pretty soon afterward, her sister's body is found in a park. The way she died as well as an apparent psychosis she was suffering from after giving birth to a stillborn baby gives everyone the impression that Tess took her own life. Beatrice believes her sister would never have taken her own life, but nobody else is interested in hearing her. She becomes increasingly unkempt and "crazy looking" as she conducts her own investigation into what really happened to Tess. And she does her investigation without the support of anyone at all - nobody, not even her fiancee or her own mother, believe that Tess was murdered. But still Beatrice refuses to give up her investigation. Turns out there's a lot of truths to uncover. General thoughts: Well, I just finished this book and found it to be quite a strange experience. It was definitely a gripping story, and well written in parts, and yet in other parts I found Lupton's use of commas really odd, and sometimes her sentence structure seemed almost amateurish. Which was weird because in many other parts, she sounded like the most beautiful, poetic writer ever. So, all in all I found it odd for that reason. But the story itself? Very gripping, and with a gasp-worthy and slightly upsetting twist at the end. In the back of this copy of the book is a little interview with the author, and she gives us her opinion about what the ending really means. i.e. was it real or not? She believes that it was real, but says it is up to the individual reader to decide what they think. I'm the sort who can't really believe it's real unless there is 100% blatant "yes, it is real and here is all the proof" confirmation. But it sure did make me sit up and go "WHAAAA?" All in all, this was a great read and if you like crime/thriller from an amateur sleuth perspective, I definitely recommend it.
