The classic story of Abbie and Will Deal - pioneers who left everything behind for the promise of a new life on America's frontier. Heartwarming and inspiring...

Not my favorite Irving. Too many pages. He creates some pretty weird worlds that I usually like to roam around in, but this world went on for too long.

The Book Thief is a prime example for why young adult novels are for more than just young adults. I adored this book. I was swept away by the prosy narration, helmed by none other than Death, the immortal entity, struggling with and trying to understand human nature. Leisel (the book thief) is an orphan taken in by a poor foster family in Munich, Germany. The novel takes place between 1939-1943, from when she’s ten until she turns fourteen. The book revolves around her and the people of her life, from her mother and deceased younger brother, her kind, quiet foster father that taught her to read, and her brazen, gruff, and golden-hearted foster mother. It tells the story of Max, the Jewish young man her foster family hides temporarily, and Rudy, the boy-next-door who was Leisel’s best-friend and the boy she loved. It tells the story of the wealthy woman Leisel stole books from and encouraged her to write. And Leisel, the brave, wily girl who harnessed the power of words. The Book Thief is a heart-breaking tale set during one of the most devastating times in recent history. But it will make you laugh, cry, and reflect. Go read it.

Polly is more of a book for young adults that was published nearly twenty years too late. I really wanted to like this book, but it did not live up to my expectations. In some ways, it was kind of fun, cause reading I felt like I was a teenager again, remembering what it was like to be in high school, listening to music, going to shows, and chasing boys. It bothered me that this character was named Polly, and according to the author she was named after the disturbing beautiful Nirvana song of the same name- about a girl being assaulted. The cultural references and the setting are cool, but the characters are soooo boring. I wanted Polly to do something crazy, but she never did. The most interesting characters in the book were "T-Shirt Boy," the older boy Polly meets at a show was somewhat interesting, along with the British DJ she meets in college. Polly was so bland I had a hard time wondering what guys saw her. She didn't seem edgy or punk at all, in fact, a little nerdy. She was middle-class girl from Virginia with a summer job at the Disney Store in the mall wearing a skirt and loafers. How lame.

As a young girl, the artist considered a visiting Korean Uncle and her mother's traditional Korean cooking as oddly unAmerican affectations. As a young woman she feels a need to connct with her cultural heritage. We learn about Korean history as the artist learns about her mother's personal story through her encounters with relatives who remained in Korea.

Better than the first book. I love to hate this series. I keep reading and complaining about it at the same time.

Even the worst Dickens is so much better than the best of most other authors, that you just can't go wrong with one of his books. While not quite as majestic as my favorite (Tale of Two Cities), this book still has plenty to recommend it.

A Clash of Kings left me a bit empty in comparison to Martins first entry to the series. Martins style and story line remained as intricate and entralling as in his previous work however his individual storyline endings did not live up to my expectations. I didnt feel enraged at any of the cliffhanging characters nor did I feel and sense of satisfaction either. Apparently Martins all bets are off approach in terms of his characters lifespans took a bit of an alternate route to some regard. At one point it felt like everyone was dead then they are not. Usually I would not dwell on this, but to me it got to the point that this approach became too forced and not naturally flowing. This would be similar to the late 90's film Scream which spawned a ridiculous trend of future horror movies biting off of the tactic of making the killer a complete surprise. After it was done once it feels fresh and interesting but when it becomes the constant norm it becomes tiresome, as is the case with the suggest deaths here which arent as they appear. Pehaps part of my problem is that I also felt that Martin paid too much attention to certain characters and not enough on others to the point that I feel the story is becoming far too expansive. Most of what I liked in the original entry was the vast amount of characters and how they all interacted and impacted each other so as you read a chapter dedicated to a certain character, you also learned what other characters were also doing at this point in time. Now each character is literally so out of touch with each other and developing their own personal storyline, I feel it is losing the interaction that I originally couldnt get enough of. All in all, I did enjoy this, and read it extremely quickly due to how it drew me in. I still look forward to the 3rd Ice and Fire entry, I am just hoping for more cohesiveness and less expansion.
