Olaa Soqar olaa_soqar — While in the midst of reading some "heavier", more sophisticated grown-up fare, I took a break to give myself my first ever experience with reading Roald Dahl (Borders was selling a Dahl boxed set for half-off, and I had to go ahead and buy it). I never read Dahl as a child -- I'm not sure why. Maybe he just wasn't in vogue then...I really don't even remember seeing his books on the shelves when I was little. But better late than never. This episodic adventure of a boy and his mutant fruit proved to be a quick read with moments of pure, absurd, hilarity (most often directed toward the book's adult characters, who are depicted as silly buffoons at best or cruel and abusive at worst). [image error] I've often seen Dahl's work cited as an influence behind bizarro fiction (an emerging scene of weird fiction that is definitely NOT for kids), and the surrealistic, funky-disjointed (and I mean that as a compliment) narrative would not be too much out of place in a Carlton Mellick book. A must read for anyone who is a fan of the weird.
