Usually I despise any type of modern prequel or sequel to a piece of classic literature (For God's sake people, leave Mr. Darcy alone!), but this book was absolutely amazing. The characters were well-developed, the story line face paced and intriguing, and the way the authors explained everything about Neverland was really neat. I actually liked this version of the Peter Pan character better, as I always found the original (even as a child) to be too much of an immature, self-centered jerk. Already have the two sequels checked out from the library and can't wait to read them!

I actually only made it halfway through. It has been so long since I picked it up that I'm officially moving on, though I might be interested to return to it later, when I have more time to read straight through. Interestingly, I've had this trouble with Chabon before. As much as I enjoyed KAVALIER AND CLAY, I don't think I quite finished that one, either. This isn't typical of me, but I do seem to have trouble staying focused on Chabon's stories. There's this lack of urgency or significance, as if he enjoys the individual moments so much that he gets lost in them. Not sure. At any rate, SUMMERLAND was hard for me because I'm just not a baseball fan. I am a fan of unusual or original fantasy, which is why I was excited to give this a chance. But the fantasy aspects didn't feel different or interesting enough, and the baseball references were lost on me. In the end I think I'd enjoy watching a film version more than reading the lengthy novel.

I really enjoyed this book. The simplicity that is used to tell such a thought provoking storey was great.

This author owes a clear debt to Stephen King, who is quoted (from Pet Sematary) at the start. That said, this has its own clear voice, and the protagonist is simply fantastic. At times, I felt this a little much for believability/immersion in the story/being able to set aside fictional coincidence and run with it, but the imagery here is great, the dialogue is wonderful, the scenes are sharply drawn for the most part, and there's enough backstory given to get you close to the protagonist, but not so much that it ruins the mystery. This was a great beach read but it's also one I will put on the shelf to eventually read again. My initial comment, too, may make this sound like a horror novel, but though it has zombies, really, it's road trip book/story about a teenage girl on her own (who's forced to mature quickly in some ways but who is still clearly childlike). The horror in the book is not the point, and the gore here doesn't get out of hand, so it's realistic and engrossing as a story without being a typical shlocky horror read or slash-fest. Well done.

This is more than an overview of Western Philosophy. It's a remarkable achievement, detailing how philosophy originates as both primitive science and theology and how it has governed the course of Western thought since the earliest periods. Its a long read, a heavy read, in fact at times it a down right difficult read! But it rewards, both in understanding philosophical ideas and its application, not just to its historical and cultural environment, but to our modern day circumstances as well. The only downside is its slight datedness and the referencing 'recent' events - circa 1945. However, these moments are far and few between, especially when the construction of language is as elegant as it is, allowing for an easy grasp of complex ideas.

Dark and gritty story that takes place primarily in a murderous forest after a war between human and faerie folk. The imagination and detail of the story are amazing. High fantasy - very otherworldly. The character's that set out on the journey together are unique. We're in the main character's head through narrative for a large part of it but the story was interesting and suspenseful enough to pull me through easily.

Another fun romp through the English monarchy from Philippa Gregory. The best part of this book was that it was the other side of the story told in "The White Queen". It was a bit of a slow start but once it caught up with what we knew from the other book, it took off. Definitely a diversion from everyday life.

Invincible begins as a very simple superhero/coming-of-age story, prone to making direct references to other comic books and generally making liberal and light-hearted use of the dynamics established in other power fantasies. Our hero Invincible is appropriately unbeatable physically, and he also is surprisingly mature and well-adjusted, so generally the core conflict does not come from his battles or even teenage angst like the early Peter Parker. As a result the first few issues seem a little dull and formulaic until we find that the hero's seemingly perfect family will force him into a series of events that are completely outside his control (i.e. neither punching nor avoiding harm solves anything). Every panel is well-drawn, clear, consistent and coherent, but not particularly ambitious. The art makes too much use of repeated panels for "long pauses" clearly intended to pad each short issue (this exact matter is brought up when an artist is signing comics in one issue). A fun story for the seasoned superhero fan who needs a break for more grim, self-important characters.

Like Thomas' PopCo, I found this both fascinating and frustrating. Thomas definitely achieves something really special with her ability to make her writing intensely cerebral (some of my favorite parts of Mr. Y were the digressions into quantum physics and other brain-stretching topics) while at the same time creating very human, flawed characters. Still, there's a quality of...coldness that prevents me from becoming emotionally involved. Perhaps the whole thing seems too clever, too orchestrated? I don't know. Anyway: the plot of this novel is nominally about a cursed book, but is really much more like an alternate take on Being John Malkovich with an ending that feels like the close of 2001: A Space Odyssey, the part that's supposed to be best if watched stoned. As with PopCo, the experience of reading the novel was very pleasurable and interesting, but the final impact just isn't there; it's oddly unsatisfying.

I love this book! I love how Isabel Allende develops these characters and weaves their lives together so intricately.
