Not a bad story...but but but. I love post-apocolyptic stories - but a common mistake authors fall into with it is to immediately lose the sense of horror - their characters hardly react to dead bodies piling up around them - Bertram did this from the get-go. And this book was so badly edited that it is astonishing. Someone made the author chop this up without any concern for the reader's ability to follow the story and understand the characters...fortunately, I didn't care enough about any of them to worry about it.

I think I like that this book exists more than the book itself. I have a soft spot for the movie Alexander. Ok, I WOULD have a soft spot for the movie, except critics almost universally panned it, so now I have a raging, defensive, all encompassing love for the movie. Yes, I know there are flaws and it's even ridiculous at times (and NOT GAY ENOUGH [Rachel, that one's for you]) but I love it anyway. Which seems to be the opinion taken by most of the essays here. Most tend to address an issue with the film (the portrayals of Olympias, Hephaestion, the Harem, Alexander himself) but they gently, kindly explain what was wrong. Their concerns are generally valid, not just whining about the movie being too long or the accents too ridiculous (though that does come up). And Oliver Stone, bless his heart, wrote the afterword. He's willing to take criticism. He endorses it! *SNUGGLES*

Probably closer to 3.5, this is an interesting exercise in minimalist techniques – Gardner manages to move from scene to scene with little in the way of transitions, almost to the point where I had trouble following certain paragraphs that started in one time/place and ended a week later. It gave the novel a dreamy, vignette-like feel, which can be likened to the in-and-out-of-consciousness states of the boxers who populate it. Speaking of, the boxing scenes are great, and told in an exciting way that doesn’t boil down to the usual play-by-play cliches. When Gardner is with a character, he’s very much with him, and so as Tully and Ernie fight the action is disjointed and confusing, just as it is for the fighters. The book is worth reading for the fight scenes alone (if you’re into that, of course). The trouble I might have with this novel, though, is that its cut-happy style may have trimmed more than just the fat – when Billy Tully disappears from the book after the first few pages, I wondered if he was ever going to come back, or if he was just some sort of plot-starter, there to kick over the engine and move along. When he did come back, I didn’t know much at all about him, and by the end, I still only got bits and pieces. Was there more to know? I’m not sure, but I have the suspicion that there was. Still, all in all, a good little book about how rotten it is to fight for a living.

Loving this Author right now, and this series (Doomsday Brethren). My god. It's all very ... dramatic. I adore the fact we're working through the characters individually, and getting to see them all in greater detail whilst the overarching story arc plays out. Um, why isn't Mathias d'Arc dead yet? It feels like he should be dead now. I feel bad for Lucan at the moment ... he's got it rough, and in future books it aint getting much better, lol. This book was my favorite so far. Ice was a great character. Sabelle kind of annoyed me ... a bit of a weakling at times (I preferred Olivia to her), but not teeth grindingly bad. Recommended for magic and old skool romance lovers.

You guys! Our aunt and uncle just won the gold first-place award in the Independent Publishers Awards as the best animal book of 2007. I have a copy in my apartment if you want to check it out. It has lots of fascinating pictures and fun facts, and by "fascinating pictures" and "fun facts" I mean "I think it's really gross but obviously somebody's into it." Namely, Aunt Tracy and Uncle Dave. Anyway, here's a link to the awards site in case you want to see what else is out there in the world of independent publishing: [http://www.independentpublisher.com/a...] Also, here is a link to their website (Vida Preciosa International): [http://www.vpi.com] It just goes to show how far you can go with 2,000 snakes and a dream.

My fiance told me to read these books and at first I was a little skeptical - fantasy isn't typically my genre of choice. I had a little difficulty with the first few chapters but once the plot truly started coming together I couldn't put it down.

I read this while putting together an exhibit on Irish Literature relating to the 1916 Easter Rising for my Rare Books seminar last semester. It's a tiny play, but really good. It's exactly what I want out of Irish literature - nationalistic, proud, sad, and poignant. Plus, Maud Gonne played Cathleen when it first opened, and I just love the whole unrequited love thing Yeats had with her.

This book in the series deals with Sookie trying to save Bill from the people who captured him. But really, when we find out what Bill did, I don't think Sookie should have saved him. The book leaves us wondering what is going to happen between Sookie and Bill, and since I don't watch True Blood, I have no idea what's going to happen. I am hoping that they break up and don't get back together!
