Ikaika Sugui isugui720d — Probably closer to 3.5, this is an interesting exercise in minimalist techniques – Gardner manages to move from scene to scene with little in the way of transitions, almost to the point where I had trouble following certain paragraphs that started in one time/place and ended a week later. It gave the novel a dreamy, vignette-like feel, which can be likened to the in-and-out-of-consciousness states of the boxers who populate it. Speaking of, the boxing scenes are great, and told in an exciting way that doesn’t boil down to the usual play-by-play cliches. When Gardner is with a character, he’s very much with him, and so as Tully and Ernie fight the action is disjointed and confusing, just as it is for the fighters. The book is worth reading for the fight scenes alone (if you’re into that, of course). The trouble I might have with this novel, though, is that its cut-happy style may have trimmed more than just the fat – when Billy Tully disappears from the book after the first few pages, I wondered if he was ever going to come back, or if he was just some sort of plot-starter, there to kick over the engine and move along. When he did come back, I didn’t know much at all about him, and by the end, I still only got bits and pieces. Was there more to know? I’m not sure, but I have the suspicion that there was. Still, all in all, a good little book about how rotten it is to fight for a living.

عبدالله الشمراني ab12ab10032948 — (Received through the LibraryThing Early Reviewer program) A brilliant and devious thriller - I can see why it won the Naoki Prize. The Devotion of Suspect X is amazingly, and intelligently, plotted, with every detail adding to the overall setup and resolution. The pace is subtle but moves quickly, and there are times toward the end when the situations are just heartbreaking. I might offend many people here if I add that it reminded me of Death Note, but it really did (minus the whole, you know, death note part) - if only because it's Japanese, told from the point of the view of the murderer(s), and the main story is really a fantastic battle of the wits between the murderer(s) and the people trying to solve the murder. If you're a character-driven reader, this may not be the book for you, because it's more about the setup and the mystery than the characters. Unless you're like me and found the genius physicist just a bit amazing. The English translation is fairly well done, but on the whole, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was reading a translation. I'm a little tempted to pick up the original versions of some of his earlier books. On an even less-related note, I found out that the drama Galileo is based on the other "Detective Galileo" books by Higashino Keigo *and* the genius physicist is played by Masaharu Fukuyama :o

paulinejones
Pauline Jones paulinejones — Hunting Human is at times your typical "werewolf meets human he can't resist" story and others an emotionally intense story about a girl who lost her closest friend (sister from another mother) in a brutal attack. We are introduced to Beth (Elizabeth; Lizzy) and Rachel through Beth's flashbacks of their trip through Europe. Liz being the responsible one of the two. As usual, she watched over Rachel while she partied a bit too hard at a local bar. While there, they attracted the wrong kind of attention from Markko Bolvek, a local werewolf. He abducts a not yet sober Rachel and Liz. She watches Rachel get attacked and killed before managing to escape. Flash forward 2-3 years, Beth has spent much of her time back in the US wandering from one place to another, always looking over her shoulder and never settling down. Not until she gets a job at a local coffee shoppe and cafe in Portland, Oregon where she forms a bond with the shoppe's owner, Angie and another employee. The two ladies make her laugh and without knowing it, help her get to a place emotionally where she can truly begin to rebuild her life. Angie, a long-time mother-like figure in his life, tries to sway Braden Edwards, from approaching Beth when she notices his piqued interest in her. She warns, "Not that one. She's complicated. Not quick to socialize. There's a past there. She's not suited to casual romances." But, he can't resist. "He had to know her." Braden's attempts to break through Beth's shell as they get to know each other were adorable. He's charming, handsome and funny. Beth's equally nervous, this being her first date in three years. Their dates quickly turn hot as Braden(view spoiler) is unable to hold back. From there, things are hot and cold between the couple as Beth tries to overcome the horrors of her past and the discoveries they make of each other. Past and present collide when the shadow Beth's been hiding from emerges to have his revenge. There are a lot of things the couple haven't shared about themselves when he appears, throwing their relationship into a spiral and neither is sure what will happen next. Or if it's even possible to have a relationship at all. Amanda Alvarez created a dark, emotional and steamy PNR that draws you in and keeps you intrigued throughout. I'd definitely read another book by this author. I also hope that this may turn into a series. I'd really enjoy seeing more of Braden's family, who were a great addition to the story. Especially Lucy, Braden's sister, who quickly fills the whole in her heart left by losing Rachel. Of course, I wouldn't mind reading more about his brothers either. :) This was a free NetGalley ARC.

Crispin Chan crisdsign — Brown tells us about Montgomery, Alabama in the early 20th century from the perspective of the apex of society and the nadir and what happens when the two come in contact. Interesting characters, fascinating situations, this is a laugh out loud read.
