For those of you who like Elmore Lenorad (of Get Shorty fame), this is just another in a series of really well written detective stories with a total unique twist. This is all about reading for fun! The characters are smart (including the bad guys), funny, and the settings are unique. The setting is in Detroit during the final years of WW2. Carl Webster, Federal Marshal and cowboy from OK, is on the trail of two Nazi POW escapes in the USA. He stumbles upon a free-spirit, Honey Deal, whom he enlists to help him track the whereabouts of the escapes. Here's a good scene from the book as Honey attempts to infiltrate a Nazi spi ring that has knowledge of the whereabout of the escapes. Honey shows up unannounced at the door during a meeting and says, "Sig Heil, you'll." This book is R-rated for language and scenes that have sexual content, but leave most stuff to the imagination.....

It took me a good chunk of time to get through this relativly slim book. When Ondaatje's prose works, especially when he's describing Kip dismantling bombs (really the best moments of the book, IMO), it's substantial. But the rest of the time it's too weighty, too aggrandizing in its poetry. Kip's reaction to the end of the war also felt artificial, as if the author was no longer letting the character speak for himself, but putting his own modern feelings into him. Had moments of interest but I'd encourage others to pass on this one.

The book jacket reminded me of Grossman's The Magicians that I found disappointing, so I had low expectations when I started this one. (I can't even remember who recommended it.) Not the best writing, but it is a decent debut YA novel, and it has all the fantasy elements that I like. A typical post-Potter boarding school fantasy story, the story's characters include contemporary witches, warlocks, demons, vampires, werewolves, and fairies. The main character has existed in the non-wizarding world for her whole life, but when she continues to use her magic and draw attention to herself the powers to be and her non-witch mother finally send her to reform school for witches. Coming of age adventure ensues. I enjoyed the story and think it would be a good beach read for teenage girls.

Lucy and Oliver Crown's marriage goes on the rocks when their thirteen-year-old son, Tony, catches mama in bed with another man. Somehow they all manage to be so hurt that no clear communication or reconciliation is possible for the next thirty years. A bit melodramatic, but well written, so almost believable even though I failed to understand Lucy's motivation at some deep level. Why was she so weak willed? It seemed like she was hysterical and I don't think that was what Shaw intended me to think. Ultimately I wonder if he really understood his character at all. Trashy and riveting at the same time.

There is nothing about this book I enjoyed. Nothing. It is almost impossible to read. I would never read it again. It is written from the POV of a five year old who has grown up as a captive. with his mother, in a room. Objects have names, Lamp, Plant, etc.. It was infuriating. I have no idea how anyone could enjoy this.
