Read this book aloud to my son, who's a true fantasy fan. We both really enjoyed it--the characters, the suspense, and the magic. Well-written, intelligent, and entertaining for the young and not so young.

This is a wonderful series about the life and ministry of the Savior. Gerald Lund does a masterful job taking us into the historical context of the time period and creating real-life characters that help us understand the time, culture, and the amazing impact the Savior's ministry must have been on those living during that time. The series was originally intended to contain five volumns, until Gerald Lund was called to serve as a general authority in the LDS Church. Books 1 and 2 are especially powerful, whereas Book 3 has so much crammed into it (what was intended for volumes 3 - 5) that you miss exploring the development of the fictional characters as much as you are able to do in the first two volumes. Regardless, this is a highly recommended series.

"Quando me pediram para fazer a recensão crítica de um livro vi-me envolvida em inúmeros dilemas: qual a obra mais indicada? A de um autor nacional ou a de um autor estrangeiro? E que género literário agradará mais aos meus colegas? Decidi-me por escolher um livro que achei realmente extraordinário quer pela «realidade» retratada, quer pela forma como me prendeu até finalmente o terminar: O Padrinho (1969) de Mario Puzo. Contactei com este autor através de uma das colecções da revista Sábado (aliás, iniciativa bastante louvável, pois proporciona livros com uma relação preço-qualidade muitíssimo razoável). Mario Puzo (1920-1999) foi um autor Americano de origens italianas que ficou conhecido exactamente por este livro e pela sua consequente adaptação cinematográfica por Francis Ford Coppola, com ajuda do autor. Puzo ganhou por este trabalho um Óscar na categoria de Melhor Argumento Adaptado. Publicou outros livros sobre a máfia (entre outros temas) tais como O Siciliano (1984), sequela de O Padrinho, O Último Padrinho (1996), Omertà (2000), A Família (2002). Provavelmente muitos serão os que já viram o filme mas não leram o livro. A história abordada nestes dois suportes é sensivelmente a mesma: centra-se na figura de Vito Corleone (interpretado por Marlon Brando), o Padrinho, um italiano que chegou a Nova Iorque, aos doze anos, fugido da Sicília para não ser morto. O Padrinho prospera e ele e os seus filhos, Sonny, Fredo e depois também Michael (Al Pacino), gerem o negócio do “azeite” e são respeitados pela comunidade italiana. Todos sabem que se precisarem de auxílio, podem recorrer a eles, com a contrapartida de ficarem a dever um favor que poderá ser requisitado a qualquer altura. Apesar de fazer parte da Máfia Italiana, o Padrinho “recebia toda a gente – rico e pobre, poderoso e humilde – com igual demonstração de afecto”. Esta e outras acções realizadas ao longo do romance, levam-nos a simpatizar com ele, a vê-lo como um personagem mais humano e acessível e menos todo-poderoso, conquanto os meios que utiliza para ajudar os outros sejam algo reprováveis. Acabaremos por saber quem sucederá ao Padrinho, continuando ou descontinuando o seu negócio. Mais não revelo para aguçar a curiosidade de futuros leitores. Contudo, posso ainda dizer que quem gostou do filme, adorará o livro: o autor não perde tempo em grandes descrições, o que torna a acção acelerada e cada vez mais viciante, sendo a caracterização das personagens mais aprofundada. Enfim, é o retrato perfeito de um submundo desiludido com a justiça oficial e terrena e, talvez também, divina. Tendo as suas próprias leis e em que todos aceitam que para elas se cumprirem não se importam os meios utilizados, sejam eles corrupção, assassínio, extorsão, roubo, chantagem, este submundo quer acima de tudo o bem da FAMÍLIA e tudo o que isso implica". There's a lot about this book to love. It's adorable, thoughtful, with original magic and world-building. The style is reminiscent of Lemony Snicket and J.K. Rowling, which is very unusual for Lisa and was pretty well executed. I loved the social commentary that created the world. Also the giant animals are really really awesome, and Lisa built a nice little twist into the ending. For all of this, she earned herself three stars. But two substantial problems kept me from giving this book any more. Most important are the completely flat characters. Alex is the only person who seems to grow or change at all, and Mr. Today is the only character I really cared about. Even in the dangerous scenes, I didn't care one bit if any of them lived or died because they never felt real. Without caring for the characters, it's hard for me to care about anything in the story at all. Secondly, the world was, for me, completely unbelievable. I cannot see an entire society of mothers and fathers acting this way. There would be serious unrest, even if it was just underground, if you took children that age from their parents, regardless of their "Wanted" status. And siblings wouldn't just dismiss each other out of hand. I understand that the author is making a point, and a good one, but that doesn't mean you have to sacrifice plausibility in your narrative. Having read all of Lisa's books, including her upcoming release Dead to You, I can say with confidence that it's themes like we see in Dead to You and Wake that allow Lisa to really shine. When she's using that almost stream-of-consciousness narration, dealing with hard-hitting real life themes, that's when I love her most. I appreciate where she was going with this story, and certainly where the story came from, but it turned out far from her best work. Still looking forward to her next one, though!
