I really, really, really enjoyed this book. I basically read the whole thing in one sitting on a red eye to New York, so I was completely absorbed in the story. I found the setting to be really unique and interesting and I absolutely loved the characters, especially Rosie. The only problem I had with this book was the cruelty to the circus animals - those parts were really hard to read. But I guess that is the harsh ugly reality of the circus, especially 90 years ago. I also felt this is one of the first novels I have read in a long time where the ending was absoutely perfect. I wish I could start over and read it again for the first time.

One basic idea, but so core that probably worth a read. Some simple math around profiling eg software or a production process and notion of hotspots (bugs are not uniformly distributed and place with lots of edits still has more bugs) is a more general theory than this. And, post-profiling, things can't stay 80/20, it seems. The idea of uneven effort allocation has a couple of credible supporters -- eg Ben Silbermann, the (co)founder of Pinterest, argues for "doing one thing perfectly". Overall, focus on one key aspect/strength is connected to "attack/offense" style, vs defense -- as found in investing, business strategy, etc.

I got this book just to read the short story "1408" and it was good. I think I might like to see the movie. the story was too short for me but I liked it. I am not really into scary stuff but for some reason this story intrigues me. the rest of the stories were OK. I really liked the one called "That feeling you can only describe in french" meaning déjà vu. That was very good. Not a book I would recommend though. I forgot how much Stephen King swears in his stories. Even in the introduction to the book he is dropping four letter words. For a such a gifted witter the swearing in the introduction really made him sound unintelligent.

"The book begins with Seena Slepy on trial for the murder of her husband, Dick. Dick is a doctor who has brought his wife and four daughter to West Africa to begin missionary work. The story takes place in the late 1970's and is told from the point of view of Seena, Dick and the daughters, Mary Grace, Mary Catherine, Mary Tessa and Amaryllis. We also hear from two other characters who are important in this novel. Dick leads his family to an unfamiliar world where the life they knew will never be the same again. I loved this book. The settings are beautiful, Michigan and West Africa. The novel actually begins at the end and then the following chapters are told by each character and we are periodically taken back to the end of the story before we continue on. Now that I have read the book, if I was to read the story again, I know I would have a totally different view and feeling towards each character. It seems the author wanted us to be aware of how we label and view others before we really know them. I really think this book was so well written and I will continue to think back on it for quite awhile. I definitely recommend!"

Reviewed by Jaglvr for TeensReadToo.com Looking for a fast-paced murder mystery? Look no further than DEATH BY BIKINI! I know if nothing else, the title alone should make you stop and consider the book. Aphra Connolly and her father live on a tropical island. Her father left his resort in South Carolina to open the remote hotel four years ago. Most people would envy Aphra's life at the beach. But Aphra has no friends, no social life, and little to occupy her time except for the day-to-day operations of the hotel. The most her father can do to punish her is dock her pay. It's not like he can ground her. Where would she possibly go? To make life even more miserable for Aphra, her mother opted not to move to the island with them. She's had no contact with her mother in the four years they've been there. Enter the Smith family. It's late at night and a family arrives, without reservations. Being such a remote location and requiring a helicopter to arrive, this is more than unusual. Aphra has the reservation system computerized, but her father insists on handling these new arrivals. Following up the next morning to ensure her father has entered everything properly; Aphra can find no record of them. And to confuse matters further, her father has supposedly put them in the one villa that is being renovated. It's off season, and many other options would be available for them. It makes no sense. When the girlfriend of a frequent rock star guest is found dead on the beach, the intrigue picks up. From that point on, the action in the story is nonstop, rushing to the conclusion on the (expected) dark and stormy night. Mysteries surrounding her mom's departure and the strange guests all are revealed by the end of the story. With a token love interest for Aphra in the form of the Smith's teenage son, Seth, there is plenty in the story to satisfy anyone that will pick it up. There is romance (though very clean), mystery, murder, tropical locales, and espionage. What more could anyone ask for? It was a pleasant surprise to be so engrossed in DEATH BY BIKIN by Linda Gerber. I wasn't sure what to expect, having read her STUDENTS ACROSS THE SEVEN SEAS contributions. DEATH BY BIKINI is a totally different genre. But in all honesty, I believe that Ms. Gerber is much more suited to the thriller story than the S.A.S.S. series. I for one am eager to pick up the sequel, DEATH BY LATTE, to find out what Aphra is going to encounter next.

One long poem, which I keep rereading. He treats the case of a homeless man, with a dignity and questioning not surprising for Tom Waits, knowing his songwriting. SOme of his questions could as easily be applied to anyone, like the implications of this statement, "My parents were good people/ Shirley and Raymond/They prayed for a child/Just like me" Powerful work.

I did enJoy the book, but honestly, I LOVED the movie more. I thought the parts in the book about Celia just d-r-a-g-g-e-d on for too long, and the movie took care of that. I felt like Skeeter was a bit too insecure in the book...too *mousey*... the movie took care of that. I couldn't really *hear* the Voices well in the book, and yet the movie brought it all too life SO much better than I was able to in my head when I read the book. I cried many times during the movie... The story is powerful and moving and I understand the controversy surrounding the book, but honestly, when I saw the movie, it all melted away because the Voices of The Help Were, to me (and in my own head and heart), Honored and Heard.
