I didn't like it as much as Savannah Blues. Maybe because it's in Atlanta. it's about married people and divorce where the woman did not know about the finances in her own marriage. Dumb! The other characters I liked more than the main one.

I bought this book months ago, possibly years ago, because I liked the cover and the description on the back. Around page 65, I couldn't figure out what exactly was going on plot-wise. By page 160, I don't think I was any closer to figuring it out. When Frankie started following Matthew around, I thought, "Perhaps something will finally happen, instead of all this nothingness," but still nothing. I commented to my husband at page 238, "Finally . . . a plot!" The biggest problem that I had with the book is the fact that Frankie does absolutely nothing. Sure, she emails the Bassets directives and such, but what does she really do? Lament that they won't accept her? Try and figure out if Alpha will admit that she is his equal? In the end, it was a whole lot of nothing. I normally purchase books I can bring into my classroom for my students to read. This one, I'm fine with 7th graders reading. There was a little chaste kissing and talking about Matthew possibly seeing her without her shirt on. The bras-scapade was even fine. However, I certainly won't be holding this up for plot development since there was so little of it being done.

Meh. I didn't *hate* this, but it wasn't my cup of tea. I read The Garlic Ballads many years ago and liked it a lot, but these short stories just seemed dashed off, incomplete, and crudely rendered.

Lisa Clifford married an Italian man - and along with this a story about his great grandfather who had been murdered in the mountains of Tuscany early in the 20th century. This book is a recreation of an almost feudal age - dirt poor families scraping a living and paying half their earnings to the wealthier overlords. No wonder there was a tolerance for social change - in their case through fascism (although this wasn't part of the book). She interviewed many older relatives to try to find out who had committed the murder at the heart of the story. The details of their lives were fascinating though I felt that she never completely nailed the personalities of all the key players. I thought of the Janet Malcolm book that I read this year - both stories of murder, 'real events' and both writers not quite able to capture the personal element. But I loved reading about the details of their daily lives and thinking about how wealthy we are in comparison. Just one example - the son was sent to drove sheep in winter. He was a little boy of about 10 years old and was away for about 3 months - he was paid one shoe (not two), for his work. What young people took responsibility for was breathtaking in comparison to the way we treat children now. Their's was a pretty hard society, we are a decadent one.

Only Mahshweta Devi could have dealt with a subject like this in its true human spirit. Its a story around a mother and his dead son, but therein lies the key to unterpreting the human tragedy behind the Naxalite revolution, the misplaced idealism and how a generation of urban, young Bengalis were sacrificed at the altar of a lost ideal.

Speechless. What a story.

Utterly fascinating from the get go. I found myself composing essays in my head while I was reading, which was a shocker

Wonderful book! It got a little slow towards the end, but the ending revved back up to finish well.

Had to DNF this one. The first chapter was full of awfulness (not sleeping for days and driving and not caring about the danger to yourself or others and not even being surprised or upset about having an accident and imaginary* person orgasms). I contemplated continuing with the hopes that it got better because I really liked the first two but there are just too many books out there waiting to be read. *In the text he isn't imaginary but he isn't a physical being either.
