This is the story of a murder mystery set in 1659 in a village in Germany. The 1600's have always seemed like an awful time to be alive -- no good medicines or painkillers, not much bathing or brushing of teeth, public executions, lots of superstition. And of course no rights for women. The story centered around the murders of some children in the village and the people who try to solve the mystery while everyone else is trying to obscure the truth. Not the best prose or most creative tale, a bit interesting for being about a village hangman in the 1600's. I wonder if "The Hangman's Daughter" was the original title before translation? (Just noticed it was "Die henkerstochter" which may really be The Hangman's Daughter). Not the most descriptive of this story, really. I'm not sure where I heard about this book, but the most interesting thing about it was the epilogue in which the author speaks of his own family history.

Oh, how I love Cassandra Clare. In short time, I devoured her Mortal Instruments series (which I’ll write a review on eventually), falling in love with Clary and Jace. When the trilogy ended, I was devastated. I needed more of these Shadowhunters and more of the beautiful world that Cassandra Clare had crafted. Lucky for me, Clockwork Angel came out. This was the first in a series of prequels to The Mortal Instruments series. I was scared at first, thinking that it just would not stack up to her previous efforts, but I was so, so wrong. First of all, can I talk about that gorgeous cover? When I was wandering aimlessly through the bookstore (not even knowing that this book was out), I caught it out of the corner of my eye and was drawn in by the dark beauty. The whole cover has an old London, mysterious feel to it and I was in love. Now, the actual book. If I had doubts before, I have none now. Cassandra Clare cannot disappoint me–Clockwork Angel sucked me in during the first two pages and I had a hard time putting it down. I actually decided to read it for the Dewey 24-Hour Read-A-Thon, but was so sad that I would almost be finished the book that I kept putting it down so I could come back to it later. I didn’t want it to end! The character development was spot on and I can’t wait to see Tessa grow throughout the series. The clockwork creatures were terrifying to me, in a way–it made for a great Halloween read. And the love triangle between Tessa, Will, and Jem … well, of course, I’m on Team Will! It was great to see the characters from The Mortal Instruments in this series and I look forward to seeing how the new characters came to be. Each character has their own story to tell and it was nice to read a book and not have to refer back to previous pages to figure out who is who. All of that being said, I definitely enjoyed The Mortal Instruments more than this installment–who wouldn’t love Jace and Clary? Clary was such a great character and Tessa’s just not there yet for me–but it definitely holds a dear place on my bookshelf. In even more great news, the second book in this trilogy, Clockwork Prince, comes out THIS Saturday. I can’t wait to get my hands on it. It will be a great read during this snowy Alberta month. Thank you to Cassandra Clare for writing such amazing books!

What an interesting romp through history. I'd never even heard of (nor heard the voice of) Sarah Vowell when I picked this up discounted somewhere. Her voice is a little annoying, but a perfect match for her wit and the subject of this book. I loved the Lincoln section because it's the most familiar. The others I might have to listen to again. I still couldn't tell you who killed whom.

Okay, now I'm reading just one chapter to the kids and then reading the rest of the book after they go to bed. This is a good entry, although a bit repetitive in explaining that JD is reconstructing events through TD's letters and Sweyn and Tom's reports. I wasn't that thrilled with the train ride to the academy, but I have fond memories of the "Candy Store" and especially how Tom carved a key out of wood. Did not disappoint thirty years later.

** spoiler alert ** First, an apology to the haters(Jana and more). I didn't hate this book, in fact I ended up really liking it. Unusual at first, I wasn't sure what to expect, as rooting for the main characters woud be rooting for an extra-marital affair. The only one worth rooting for was Mike- the all too perfect husband. There were parts that were Nicholas Sparksish-Mike/cancer situation. The author nailed the grief for the loss of a loved one and also captured really well the range of a womans' emotions. I found the references to Mormon culture amusing as well as completely accurate. Also, life as a stay-at -home mom with a gaggle of kids. There were many things I identified with. The overall story was far fetched, yet retained my interest-again, kudos to the author on that one. I enjoyed the actual ending more than what you assume it's going to be. Much more satisfying in my opinion. This should make for a FUN book discussion!
