Short story telling the events of the eruption of Mount Pelée at Saint Pierre, Martinque in 1902 and the one survivor of the town. Its true account shows in hindsight the mistakes made and the dramatic annihilation of an entire town once known as the Paris of the Carribean.

Great book. Surprisingly easy read, given the complexity of the ideas in play. Stross can really write! On to the next one.

** spoiler alert ** I didn't enjoy this new book from Selznick as much as I liked Hugo Cabret. In this story, we meet Ben Wilson, who lives in Gunflint Lake, Minnesota and whose mother, the town librarian, has just died. His story is told in words. Ben is deaf in one ear and loses the rest of his hearing when he picks up a phone during a lightning storm (could that actually happen? I was skeptical). Rose is a deaf girl whose story is told in pictures. She lives in New Jersey with her strict father, and runs away to New York. The two stories continue to share similarities until they later meet. I like and respect very much what Selznick is doing in combining his art with a traditional novel. It's extremely innovative and makes for a cinematic reading experience, so I can't help but like that part of it. The museum theme is very cool, so the setting was enjoyable. Unfortunately, though, I felt like the story was predictable--I figured early on that Rose would turn out to be a relative of Ben's, I just wasn't sure what type of connection it would be. The revelation of what happened between Ben's parents also kind of killed the story for me. Here we have this emotional reunion between grandson and grandmother at the end, but all I could think about was how horribly selfish Ben's parents were, particularly his mother. His dad was a museum worker who came from New York to Gunflint Lake to research a diorama. He met Ben's mom and fell "in love" (a.k.a. they were horny) and created a child with her, whom she never told him about. Apparently they didn't love each other very much (a.k.a. "it didn't work out"), because neither one was willing to change location for the other, and so they parted ways. The Mom had Ben, but never told the Dad or his family that they had a new son/grandson. The Dad died of heart problems not knowing that he had a son, all because the Mom finally found her life complete (now that she had a child she could possess), and was so afraid that the child might leave to go to New York that she decided to keep him for herself AND never even tell him about his father or his father's family. This sounds like a woman who really neither loves her child nor her child's father--and I am supposed to be sympathetic to her character? If I were Ben and she hadn't died, I would probably have moved to New York just to spite her.

I've read this twice. It was so impactful regarding marriage and loyalty, regret and honesty. It was worth winning the Pulitzer.

I'm a bit of a sci-fi nerd at heart, and this was just super interesting, with a cool ending.

I enjoy this author's work. The story felt fresh and was a road trip story which is a plot line I like. Kudos to the author for having a "ruined" heroine who was actually ruined. I also enjoyed that their marriage was consummated early in the story as I like stories where a couple in a convenient marriage do have sex and the story is about other elements. I think that is more realistic than having married couples not having sex for months because of some weird pact or something. One of the things that makes convenient marriages so convenient is that the couple involved is 'getting some.' The reason for the road trip was obvious but that just added to the tension I think. I could have taken or left the paranormal element. I enjoyed the well written characters. The heroine was sweet and brave and the hero kind and charming.

The fact that he was able to write a book is amazing! The book itself was ok but I loved the end with all the different organizations to donate to.

I didn't enjoy this one as much as the previous books in the series. Too many annoying characters. Button Bright is a total idiot and I don't care how cute he is, if I had to read about him saying "Don't know" or "Don't care" one more time, I would have thrown the book against the wall. And what's up with Polly dancing everywhere? That would get annoying way too quickly. And Dorothy is fairly insulting to everyone she meets. I think I was more annoyed than entertained by this one.
