Marta Jimenez martacandan — Read like a dissertation instead of a how-to book. Dense and difficult to follow, the book gave me found new to learn.

Ahmed Joseph ahmedjo — McCourt somehow manages to turn the terrible trageties of his life into a wonderful story where you find yourself laughing when you should be crying. It is an amazing memior that I always reccomend.

ibsgraphic
Ilya Boruhov ibsgraphic — ** spoiler alert ** I didn't enjoy this new book from Selznick as much as I liked Hugo Cabret. In this story, we meet Ben Wilson, who lives in Gunflint Lake, Minnesota and whose mother, the town librarian, has just died. His story is told in words. Ben is deaf in one ear and loses the rest of his hearing when he picks up a phone during a lightning storm (could that actually happen? I was skeptical). Rose is a deaf girl whose story is told in pictures. She lives in New Jersey with her strict father, and runs away to New York. The two stories continue to share similarities until they later meet. I like and respect very much what Selznick is doing in combining his art with a traditional novel. It's extremely innovative and makes for a cinematic reading experience, so I can't help but like that part of it. The museum theme is very cool, so the setting was enjoyable. Unfortunately, though, I felt like the story was predictable--I figured early on that Rose would turn out to be a relative of Ben's, I just wasn't sure what type of connection it would be. The revelation of what happened between Ben's parents also kind of killed the story for me. Here we have this emotional reunion between grandson and grandmother at the end, but all I could think about was how horribly selfish Ben's parents were, particularly his mother. His dad was a museum worker who came from New York to Gunflint Lake to research a diorama. He met Ben's mom and fell "in love" (a.k.a. they were horny) and created a child with her, whom she never told him about. Apparently they didn't love each other very much (a.k.a. "it didn't work out"), because neither one was willing to change location for the other, and so they parted ways. The Mom had Ben, but never told the Dad or his family that they had a new son/grandson. The Dad died of heart problems not knowing that he had a son, all because the Mom finally found her life complete (now that she had a child she could possess), and was so afraid that the child might leave to go to New York that she decided to keep him for herself AND never even tell him about his father or his father's family. This sounds like a woman who really neither loves her child nor her child's father--and I am supposed to be sympathetic to her character? If I were Ben and she hadn't died, I would probably have moved to New York just to spite her.

Sebastian Rätzke raetzke — I didn't know very much about Malcolm X before I read this, and I learned a lot.
