I've been very into some lighter trashy reading for this summer, and Fitzgerald's thinly veiled account of his failing marriage with Zelda fit quite nicely in to that theme. Not his best work, but for some reason I'm drawn to the characters you love to hate. I'm still trying to work out how I feel about these two, and I'm hoping some of the other Fitzgerald books sitting on my night stand might have some characters that are a bit more redeeming, and might make me feel a bit better about being so invested in the tawdry lives of these two.

I was in the mood for something light after a couple of non fiction serious books. And I saw someone had given this four stars. I started and I like it at first and to be honest most of the book I liked in that it was light and entertaining and my mind became blank when reading. The down side is the writing is mediocre at best and in the beginning it was so banal and cliched I wanted to scream. I actually might have done just that. Once I got adjusted to the writing I started to enjoy the story only to be annoyed by the growing weakness with which the heroine was portrayed. I hate nothing more than a heroine who is insecure and a slew of other not pleasant qualities. Last it was fine until the end and then in the last few chapters it got sexually explicit and I was feeling quite embarrassed. Overall it was just okay.

I find this book boring. I can't symphatize with the character(s). I did not even finish it, since reading this book gives me an excuse to gulp a couple of paracetamols.

An interesting look into the life of a man living in London. McEwan develops his characters in a very conscientious manner and the pace sometimes seems to slow, but not to the point of boredom. The specture of 9/11 looms large in the book without much, if any (I read it a while ago...I need some slack), direct mention. A very insightful look at the world and the state it's in from an older, rarefied perspective.
