A fantastic book about life in a theocratic, totalitarian America. It assumes that the fundamentalist Christians react against the women's movement by militaristically taking over America and instituting laws that make the Taliban look like a swell bunch of guys. The book is written from the perspective of a Handmaid, which is a very specific role within the new system. As much as she hates the system, the heroine is not much of a hero, in the sense that she is a passive creature who is just trying to stay alive. If you liked 1984, you'll love this book.

Really liked Krauss' book, but it's odd that it was driven by prominent devices from her husband's first two novels: shadowy events and people from pre-mass murder Eastern Europe (Everything is Illuminated) and a precocious child seeking human bonds (Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close).

One of the best books I've read. The writer's observations are beautiful and incisive and help to illuminate perspectives through art and language that have shaped and fueled our desires to explore various parts of the world.

Even though it was written thirty years ago, it provides as much insight into the modern middle east as any book I've read.

The Sweet Far Thing follows Gemma Doyle as she struggles to bind the magic to restore the realms, and to figure out where she fits in in the real world. Libba Bray takes the reader a bit deeper into both of Gemma's worlds in this final installment in the trilogy, and once again it makes for a great read. The book's strongest part comes toward the very end, when the pressures of both worlds close in on Gemma and she finally has to make some decisions and take action as both a priestess and a society lady. Although I did find myself slogging through bits in the middle of the book, which rambled and was in need of good editing at times, the pace of the last 200 pages or so made up for the earlier rough patches. Overall, Gemma's story is about learning to find your voice, your self, and your inner power, and the strength it takes to be true to any of it. I wish Gemma had been around when I was a teen, myself, as I'm sure she becomes a hero to any lady lucky enough to read her at just the right time in life.

So far, this is the best out of the series ( will wait to see what I think of the fourth :) ) only because it had more depth to it. Also, I think it was refreshing to see the struggle of finding her true love, since up to this point, Edward and Bella's relationship seemed to have a few holes in it. I still wasn't able to grasp just why they loved each other so much, it seemed more like "lust at first sight" rather than "love." The tension and issues in this book made it seem like they were going beyond their initial infatuation with each other and really trying to establish a relationship that goes beyond the first crush stage (although there still is a lot of "non-breathing" going on from Bella's side LOL). I can't believe I'm almost done with this series; reading it back to back and not reading it from the beginning and waiting for Meyer to bring out the next installment makes me want to drag the time out longer, to enjoy it and basically let it sink in more. Oh well, on to the fourth!
