I usually love and dread story collections...I love the part where the stories are short and still compact in them all the goodness of a real book. I hate them if they are written just to write 20 something pages and get the fee. There are really good stories in them and some that don't quite tickle my fancy. The elusive story lines and hidden agendas that might be the thing to put in background if you're writing Tolkien style epic masterpieces just irritate me in short stories. Honey if you're writing something that should make a straight impact don't beat around the bush with it. Make every sentence count. Don`t hint all the time about something mysterious and interesting, share it with us, thats why we are reading the damn book after all...

Well, read this book and feel somewhat vindicated that civilized living has some high points as well. That's all I can remember about this play. I probably oughta reread it again.

“I have a story that will make you believe in God” The plot line of Martel's life of Pi is simple. An indian boy is traveling to America with his family on a ship of zoo animals. Their is a storm and all that survives is one life boat with the little boy, Pi and several other animals including a tiger. Who survives? What happens? And how does this story make one believe in God? Of any book to recommend, this is my favorite. This story made me understand why I believe in God, but it's certainly not going to catch you until you turn the last page and digest the book over a sip of coffee.

i remember a girl at my school would read sections of this book to the boys, hidden behind the target wall (a wall which, as the name suggests, was painted with a target that people could...throw balls at and stuff). this book must have taught generations of girls (and, as my example illustrates, boys) all the stuff 'your sister never told you'. stuff that it would make me blush to repeat here...so go read the book if in any doubt.

One of those books that lives up to and exceeds the hype. Even if baseball isn't your thing, there are many fascinating, exhilarating, even heart-breaking gems within its pages (There's a story about a middling ballplayer named Scott Hatteberg and his wife that still moves me when I think about it). On the whole, it's a great read, about something that I think many will find interesting: folks who think outside the box and paddle upstream instead of going with the flow and doing things "because that's how it's always been done." Plus, it's about baseball, the most beautiful game in the world. What could be better? :)
