This is another page turner from Higgins Clark - I read it in two days! It reminded me of an Agatha Christie novel - many murders, many suspects, many motives.....you will be guessing who is really guilty until the final pages of the novel and will still be surprised by how is all is resolved (or is it?)!

Chris Guillebeau offers advice that I will surely incorporate into my life. At times, however, he made it seem as if the only way to live a meaningful life was to accomplish extraordinary goals. Perhaps he has not completely convinced me to live his version of a life of non-conformity. For cannot average goals also provide meaning for an individual that is truly dedicated? I think the take-home message of this book is to not feel obligated to accomplish miraculous feats for the sake of recognition or legacy. I see this as conformity in itself. Rather, do something with your life that you genuinely love, and do not be pressured to change otherwise. You can truly make a difference, no matter how common or miniscule the act. I think that once you have found something that you want to put all your energy into, everyone will benefit. Do not think that you have to travel the world, start a business, or volunteer globally to be living a life of non-conformity. To find your true devotion in life and stick to it is non-conformity.

Anastasia decidedly does not have the answers. Anastasia's Aunt Rose dies, which is dealt with rather insensitively and cavalierly by both the author and her characters, and Uncle George comes to stay with the Krupniks for a while. Anastasia wastes no time in trying to set him up with eligible females. Another subplot to the story is that most of the females Anastasia knows are man-less, something Anastasia sees as quite the travesty. For such a notably humanist author, this is a rather sexist worldview. The final thread of the story is that Anastasia is incapable of climbing a rope in gym class. This is prominent on the cover of every edition of this book, but largely a non-story. Anastasia can't climb a rope. She practices quite a lot, then learns to climb the rope. Obviously. Really, as much as I like the Anastasia books, I was not pleased with this one at all.

The most remarkable thing about this book is the author's voice. Although you have to wonder how much was altered in translation from Japanese to English, it is still very compelling. I think with memoirs you can always tell whether the author is trying to gloss over negative aspects of their life, but Masuda is unapologetic and genuine. This is not the soft, lyrical story of Arthur Golden, but the real thing, expressed by someone who was there. A very rich and evocative memoir.

Not at all what I expected. The first part is rather uninteresting but it's completely made up for by the end of the book.

I liked the last 40 pages...other than that, I was pretty bored. I felt no connection to the characters.

a tad repetitive and perhaps a little heavy on the grace (and do whatever you want!). but a good read especially for those struggling with the concept of grace.

There was something about that book that refused to allow itself to be put down. The characters amused me, and change of narrative interested me and the ending surprised me.

I think the only highlight of this book was the famous 'sledding into a tree' scene that was reenacted by a certain yearbook staff. Make sure you wear a red ribbon in your hair while reading.

Hmm.
