No wonder they made this book into a movie shortly after it was published, and with Laurence Olivier and Dustin Hoffman no less! I started reading the book knowing nothing about the plot, so it was a thriller for me all the way to the last page. I have since learned that there have been many film quotes that came out of this book/movie... "is it safe?" Anyway, this was a great thriller written before all of the techno thrillers came along (1974), and also a surprisingly a relatively short story (310 pages.) I can see why this book has also become a classic in its time... it is well worth reading if you have not read it before or have seen the movie.

I love stories of family. These include those of perfect families with delightful children and mild mannered pets, and, encompasses the yarns of dysfunctional tribes that find happiness in their eccentricities. I'm a sucker for touching family sagas, a collector of family traumas, and a connoisseur of the emotional angst inflicted by parents on their offspring. What can I say, there's just something about family? For this reason, ,I thoroughly enjoyed "Sh*t My Dad Says", by Justin Halpern. In fact, I would even go so far as to say that it is best book I've read about family in a long time. Even better, it's also one of the most real with descriptions of insane dynamics, petty frustrations, and absurd antics which make any family "work." Oh, and did I mention that it's utterly hilarious? As in the gut wrenching and milk spewing variety? Or that it started in the way of many great family drama, as a somewhat secret conspiracy? Here's the backstory. When Justin Halpern was 28 years old he found himself dumped by a girlfriend and in need of a place to stay. This is when he made the decision to move back in with his mother and his retired father, Sam. Working from his new "home" as a writer for Maxim Magazine gave him the time (apparently a lot of time) to see his father through new, adult eyes. The terror that he had felt in his youth due to his father's blunt and rough spoken ways began to be replaced by admiration for a person who spoke his mind without self-censorship. He also realized that his father was unintentionally hilarious. After a particularly choice quip, Justin began to collect and post the sayings on a Twitter page. At first, they were shared with friends and family. But, of course, the proverbial shit was simply too funny to keep contained. The Twitter page soon had more than a million followers, with book deals and TV contracts soon following. That was when Sam found himself needing to confess everything and come clean to his dad that he made him a celebrity. And like any good father, there was only one tack that Sam could tack he could take: he was ridiculously proud of his son for finding success in the world. Though a bit self-conscious in the way he'd arrived at it. The story of how the book came about is wonderful and interesting, and Sam Halpern is utterly hilarious. But the focus on the explosive, expletive filled one-liners, isn't what makes the book interesting or worthwhile. Or at least not completely, I would argue that "Sh*t My Dad Says" is profound (yes, I just called it profound) for another reason. This is a story about a boy who comes to appreciate and understand his father. It's at times touching, sad, disgusting, and hilarious. But always, the adoration of a son for his father rings true. Which is why it works. If you have delicate sensibilities, this book may not be for you. Sam Halpern calls things as he sees them, and swears with exquisite artistry. But if you, like me, value frank and brutal honesty this book will delight and entertain. It's hard to recommend it enough.

There's something so Berkeley about this book, which is neither a good thing nor a bad thing, just funny for anyone who's spent any time there and reads this as an adult. I probably would have liked this more as a kid when I would have been intrigued by the game, but I thought it was a fun book nonetheless.

I would never EVER have the patience to do all the research necessary to write a book like this. It's beautiful and unbelievable--literaly: you'll read this man's story and think it's all made up, Hollywood-primed.

i'm not usually big on biographies or autobiographies, but i've realized i really enjoy reading those of artists. they have a special way of storytelling and have THE most interesting lives. i mean...most of newton's photos are of naked ladies - you have to assume he's got some stories to tell.

** spoiler alert ** My God the moment he died I felt like Chloe had pulled my heart out and chopped it into a million pieces, I still feel that way and now I’m curious of how she’s going to make this work. Ethan’s dead I can acknowledge that (I think) but that dream that Merit had she said that I felt real to her. I think I’m just confused and mourning. Chloe Neill how could you do this ?? :(

Jim and Huck are fellow escapees, drifting down the Mississippi on a raft. Huck has to struggle with his conscience for helping a slave to escape, which is a reflection of attitudes of place and time, but basic, moral principles prevail, no doubt because of Huck's lack of proper civilization. Things really get exciting when Tom shows up towards the end of the adventure, and they all have to work very hard making Jim the perfect prisoner, and setting up the perfect escape. Luckily they all survive it, but only with considerable hardship.

This is a pretty interesting read, especially for people who are interested in tattooing and of the history of tattooing in England and in the United States. I'd give it a 3.5-4 rating. It's very fast-paced, easy to go through. The topic is very unique and the writing is very good. I enjoyed the ending. It was well-worth the read.
