One of the most difficult memoirs I've ever read-- on an emotional level. I first found it slightly disjointed, but realized that was on purpose. By the time it segued into the core and foundational events of Mr. Goolrick's "issues," I was saddened beyond words. And now I feel guilty. A couple of years ago I reviewed his book A Reliable Wife. It was well-written, but certain aspects of it were lost on me (obvious, from my review). NOW, I get it. And I feel like I need to send him a letter of apology. And sympathy. Well worth the read, just don't expect to feel happy when you're done. Perhaps more just grateful that his life wasn't yours.

I actually enjoyed this book. A former classmate told me about this book. When she started telling me what it was about, I told myself "I've got to read this!" This book is about a girl named Aza, who is out to help her parents in the Featherbed Inn, where people scoff, and avoid her and her "ugliness." Later on, a gnome tells her that people aren't ACTUALLY beautiful as they seem to be. A few days later a dutchess comes and takes her to the royal wedding, where she finds the bride, the new queen, beautiful. What makes her so beautiful? Aza thought. That's what she waits to find out...There's more to the story, but if you think it sounds good, I strongly suggest you read it.

Not terrible, but not great. The ending seemed rushed, and the "main character" was left unresolved. But I wasn't expecting a great literary work but just something to feed my Ravenloft hungers. It is nice that they're re-releasing the old paperback books, though I already own most of them in the original format. A few fleeting moments of horror, and some general campaign/setting ideas, made it worth the 2 or so hours of read time.

I think I have read this book over 10 times. It never gets old, plus Colin Firth makes a mean Darcy.

Hollywood novel which seems to have been inspired by: 1) the career of silent film star Sessue Hayakawa (the fictional "Sleight of Hand" is pretty much a play-by-play of the DeMille film "The Cheat"), and 2) the William Desmond Taylor murder (reopened and solved off-the-record by my grandfather in '67.)

If only I were born sixty years earlier...my obsession with James Dean is eternal and this book is a beautiful portrait of the boy behind the brooding mumbles.

Like any Chronology, this volume is for fanatics. If you wish to know what lecture Tolkien gave on 17 July 1961, or what correspondence he engaged in on 8 Nov. 1959, this is the book for you! It works well with Carpenter's Biography to give an interesting snapshot of the life of the man. Very interesting.
