Michael Atehortúa maikphoto — A friend recommended this book, and I dove into it because I like the idea of increasing happiness. Although I found the writing insipid, I stuck with it for a while because some of Rubin's ideas seemed valuable (e.g. reducing clutter to increase one's energy). But by the midpoint, there just wasn't enough content to keep me going. And I have to admit Rubin lost a lot of credibility in my eyes when I read (in a Goodreads review) that she's the daughter-in-law of Wall Street fatcat gazillionaire and former Clinton Treasury Secretary Robert Rubin. Can I relate to this woman's life? Can I trust her to report it honestly? I don't think so.

Marcin Michalak marcinmichalak — What a charming and eccentric character Holly Golightly is! Capote manages to cram a decent amount of her history and characterization in such a slim novella. It's breathtaking, sucking you in and not letting go until the last word. Indeed, all the short stories in this collection breathe with the life of the characters. The settings are wide and varied and described in a way that gives you a real picture in your head; not easy to do with a short story! After reading this, I become more interested in Capote himself. What kind of upbringing must he have had to write on the topics of prostitutes in Haiti with the same aplomb as he does an impoverished little boy and his elderly friend? This is the first book by Capote I've read, though I've seen "In Cold Blood" the movie and have intended to read that book for a while. I am now more likely to pick it up to read sooner, and also to get a hold of his other work.
