I loved "Bel Canto" so I was excited to read more of Ann Patchett's books. Unfortunately, this particular read was nothing like her masterpiece. I finished the book disappointed at the weird storyline.

This was a very good (easy reading, too!) to read. It's about one sister's captivity in North Korea while the other sister in the USA trying to fight for her freedom. This book is mainly written from both Laura's (NKorea) and Lisa's (USA) perspective and the storyline what happened parallel with the time. This is a good book to read if you want to learn more about the NKorea culture/issues (in addition to "Nothing to Envy").

An adult/YA crossover book about a young girl working in a hotel in the Adirondacks during the turn of the century. The plot borrows from Dreiser’s famous story, “An American Tragedy.”

This book was WAY to Christian for my taste - it really annoys me when evangelical Christians think they have the corner on spirituality. I did enjoy the broad idea, though, that spirituality can be found, and is helpful, in life-threatening situations. Mostly, though, the value that I found in this book was simply in learning more about what it's actually like--or, at least what it was like for one battalion--to be combat in Iraq. For that reason, I highly recommended this to other VA staff and any others who are interested in gaining an inside picture of the war.

** spoiler alert ** Caleb's Crossing is an amazing work of historical fiction.I loved this book! The story pulled me in from the start. I could barely put it down! As a work of fiction based on a few facts, this was incredibly believable. I adore the characters, and am satisfied upon finishing this read; it feels like all the loose ends are tied up, and although often sad and even tragic, the end of each character's story feels complete. I'm glad to have seen the events unfold throughout Bethia's life, and am happy that her character saw fit to describe what she and I agree are important details as she tells us the whole truth.

This book will change the way that our family looks at food. It has inspired me to be more conscientious about the growing and harvesting and transporting of everything (fruits, veggies, meats and dairy) that hits our table and our pantry. Non-fiction, the book follows a family's year-long experiment of eating locally. It is full of specific food information (such as: how potatos and peanuts grow), a few trials and tribulations (turkey breeding) as well as essays about the state of our country's food supply (large farms, small farms, farmer's markets, supermarkets, etc.). There are also recipes and sample weekly menus at the end of each chapter that highlight the time of year you've just read about. By no means is this book preachey. Each family member had one or two items in the pantry that were not local - coffee is an example - but for the most part they tried to grow or find local/regional products for their consumption. I can't say that I am going to swear off of bananas right now (too good/easy for the kids!), but I do have a real hankering for some fresh asparagus. Our farmer's market can't open up soon enough for me!

I went between just loving this book to at times finding a few of the characters to be a bit of a cliche---there were times, of course, where the satire was just spot-on and amazing, but at other times, here and there, the satire just verged into caricature (whether intentional or not, it lost me a little bit). But the wonderful interiority of the characters, the psychological astuteness of it all, kept me going. Such a world. An impressive, wonderful book.

It was a cute girly book. I have a weakness for stories that star a "single working girl" that moves to a big city and tries to leave her sleepy little town (and always annoying family) in the past. But of course she ends up back home for a visit and voila learns life lessons. She's clutzy and talks to much, but I was drawn into it.

I knew this book was going to blow me away, but i was in no way prepared just how insanely mind-blowing it is. it's like reading some horrific political/virus thriller novel except it's real and you already know the ending, or lack of ending. also, what i think is a beautiful/absolutely heartbreaking but essential thing that shilts did here was alternate the political and scientific stories with the incredibly personal stories of loss. you feel every death.
