This is now considered a favorite book of mine. It starts out very funny and gets more serious as the story progresses, yet still has humor sprinkled throughout. Violet, the main character, is very imaginative and humorous. She is honest about what she is willing to live with and what she is not, and that makes her character real to me. The time period is 1893, set in Chicago. The Great Fire, The World's Fair and issues dealing with women striving to earn their right to vote are all referred to and a part of this book. I appreciated learning more about the challenges that people were dealing with back at that time (especially women) and I felt as if I was at the World's Fair when Violet would attend with one of her suitors. Funny, interesting and educational....you can't go wrong reading this great book!

Second installment in my Pulitzer Winner spring. Great book! It's made up of characters that you totally know and don't believe all at the same time. It's a crazy ride through a very small world. HIGHLY recommend.

At first I had a hard time getting into the language/run-on sentences/English sayings of the 1800s...but once I did, I didn't want to put this one down. Just ask my husband. I was pleasantly surprised at how fiercely Anne Bronte defends the morals she believed in. I was equally appalled at Mr. Huntingdon's (her husband) lack of morals. He should be very lucky that I was not his wife! I highly recommend this little gem of a book.

Just thick prose, and nothing all that interesting yet. I have hopes for the future, though. Cause then I'll have finished this. I'd be willing to bet that Voyage of the Beagle was better (or at least more enthralling); any takers?

The best surprise of my literary life. The detail and language is like a meditation and ideal for anyone with even a touch of Mountain homesickness. I've never underlined more passages.

Probably my favorite of the Dan Browns. Mostly due to the Illuminati and the ambigrams, though, which Brown had nothing to do with.

I really wanted to like this book but I just couldn't get into it. Maybe it was the writing style that kept me detached from the "characters" (I didn't even feel like there were true characters in the book... even though there were). It definitely had an interesting/thought-provoking message. But it was painful to get through and not just because of the gore....

Loved it. It was really slow to get into--lots of hard names and facts--but I'm so glad I stuck with it. Truly inspiring.

An excellent collection of short stories on small town life, marriage, religion, and race in Alabama. I had the privilege to meet Mary Ward Brown and she is a lovely woman and a very talented author. Her stories are simple, yet have a huge impact. My favorite stories from the "Tongues of Flame" collection is "Goodbye Cliff," it is both heartbreaking and witty

This book is a great, unique memoir of Sacks' love of chemistry and science in general, with really accessible explanations of the chemistry that so fascinated him. If I could, I'd give this book a 3.5 - because just when I wanted more information about Sacks, his life, and his chemical inspirations, I would get more technical chemistry or chemistry history.
