This novel is about a woman whose husband leaves her for a much-younger woman. The couple has two children who are left solely in her care, even though she's left incapacitated by anger and shock. The sheer ferocity of this writing is stunning; the downward spiral of the protagonist seemed very real to me.

What to say about this book... I just didn't like it. I get it, I know bullying can push kids to this point, I've been there myself. But I guess I wanted the kid to cut her parents a break. Her voice in the book is so sarcastic about everything and even when she is on her website and other people are posting their problems she's like, "oh, these people are so pathetic" and it made me want to scream, "honey, so are you!" I don't know, it's just one big pity party and I just couldn't get into it. At least she had two parents who were trying. Were they clueless on a lot of things, yes. But they were doing the best they could and honestly, her silence about a lot of things that happened to her is her own fault. This book is just like 13 Reasons Why and I didn't like the MC's voice in that book either.

The most difficult and informative history class I took in college was centered on slavery in Latin America. I've always been interested in the history of South America, and even though much of the course material wouldn't really help me if I ever taught a standard high school history course, this book was pretty informative, although it's almost as old as I am.

A good read with great first-hand accounts on marriage, sex, family culture, and consumerism.
Angela's Ashes is the story of a disfunctional family with a twist, the setting is in Ireland. The book provides a comic relief for the rather depressing tale. Frankie, the eldest of several children (some of which passed away in their earlier childhood), is brought up in a world where putting food on the table is as difficult as having a sober father. His mother, Angela, is the pedestal of the family and tries to keep everyone together. When Frankies father is unable to provide for the family, Frankie takes it upon himself to find odd jobs and pitch in anyway he can. This book traces the childhood of a poor, Catholic, Irish boy and who struggles to make sense of his life. I gave this book four stars because the theme general theme of a disfunctional family was unoriginal but the Irish twist made it very entertaining to read. You can hear McCourt Irish voice tell the stories from his childhood. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and was quickly engulfed in McCourts crazy anecdotes.

Perhaps I am just overly enamored with Sorokin, but in each of his books he redeems all of the boring parts by something particularly grandiose but that seems simplistic. Perhaps it is the concept novel that makes its very goal creating a perfect believable world for the concept to thrive in. The whole world of this novel assumes the queue is important, wouldn't dare question it, not even in a vodka induced philosophical moment. Slight of hand. In this case its the sweet but cynical ending for our underacheaving hero Vadim, the only happy ending possible in a world so bored out its head with waiting, starved for that consumerist high. This conclusion paired with Sorokin's amazing afterward which waxes poetic on the bygone days of the queue and I can't help it - I'm swept away. i hear that Day of the Oprichnik is coming in English. I can't wait.

Not bad at all. There's really good emotions and characters in it. :) It was erotic but i guess that couldn't be really helped since Georgina is a succubus. Anyway, I really really like her character and of her friends. Seth is also cute for the lack of better word and interesting. Roman is also a great character. I really like him and felt sad for him. I really hope to see more of these characters n the next book. So see yah. :)

A great example of White Wolf's "tool box" approach, which they have taken with their new World of Darkness material. Some of the ideas were odd, but they were all interesting. Good work.

One of the essays in "Bros & Hoes in Prose" starts, “welcome to the first and last installment of Relationship Advice from a Guy who’s Never Been in a Relationship.” (It turns out this isn’t really the last installment, since we get the “next installment” later in the book.) After reading the first several essays, I can’t say I’m surprised. This assumes Pastukhov is serious about never being in a relationship, which might be a faulty assumption. And therein lies my main problem with this book. The best and edgiest comedy requires walking a tightrope. It often means holding a mirror up to a segment of society to show its flaws in a humorous way through exaggeration and caricature. My sense is that is what Pastukhov is attempting in the first several essays in a section called, "The (un)Fairer Sex: How to get women. Also, how to get rid of them." The first essay in this section, 3 Women You Should Date, compares three different female types along with the pros and cons of dating each. The descriptions of the three types of females with the pros and cons were humorous and mostly managed the balancing act for me. However, I found the setup, starting with the “how to get them …” subtitle of this section to his describing the first essay as “product reviews for pussy,” too much. I felt it went over the line, from humorous to misogynistic. Even when the author moves from women to other subjects in later sections, this feeling kept popping up in other ways. Although I found many places in "Bros & Hoes in Prose" that made me smile and some that made me laugh, as was promised in the description, I also found too many that pissed me off. I guess this means I need to watch MTV to find out which cookie-cutter mold applies to me. I do suspect a narrow demographic segment, maybe certain college age males, would love this book. One positive is it is free on Smashwords for those who want to see for themselves. **Originally written for "Books and Pals" book blog. May have received a free review copy. **
