All you bestselling authors out there (past, present, future)…listen up. Sarah is here to tell us to “Do as I say,” not as she did. After Sarah got dramatically wealthy in what seemed to her like an instant (after being on Oprah! Hmmmm....David Bach also dropped Oprah’s name in his book #56 on my blog but Sarah doesn't sound smarmy when she does it), she hired financial advisors, but surprise! None of them told her that she should financially protect herself. Now (one might argue), should she have had to be told that? This book is about how she wrote her first book, “Simple Abundance” which made her fabulously, unexpectedly wealthy, and how she screwed up and lost all of that money. As I read the opening to this book, I couldn’t help but think that Sarah was hoping that history could, nay would, repeat itself; that she could write another (similar) book and get fabulously wealthy again. Well, I guess it’s been well proven over the years that it can happen. I’m wondering if her gamble will pay off. Right there on the book's cover above the title of this new book is the title of her first (did she mention that it was a bestseller??) book, “Simple Abundance“. Some of her assertions, such as “I discovered that women just love to spend money,” really were just kind of offensive. There were other sentences though, like “Cheap is not cheerful, but homespun thrift wraps is in a warm tapestry of fulfillment…” (pp. 38-39) that I thought were just lovely. Here’s another: “…appreciate the precious but fleeting well spent moments of every day’s sacred ordinary…” (p.39). She is the queen of alliteration, but I happen to be a fan of alliteration. so it was all good. “The Thrill of Thrift” and “Creating a Comfort Companion” are two good examples. Sarah loses it all, and then writes her way back from that brink. She turns to history and finds solace in the life stories of other women who have been in similar situations and how they deal with it is woven in throughout this book. One of the best sayings she finds to help get her through the darker times is this: "Keep calm and carry on," p. 86. The chapters are fairly short, so if you wanted to read this book a little at a time, the format lends itself nicely to that. In the end, I liked this book very much, and think that every woman, whether she is struggling financially or not, will related to much of what Sarah says here and find it a worthwhile read. I hope it makes it to the bestseller list and that she can get back on her feet financially.

Incredible book with more depth than even Michael Chabon can squeeze into his own movie adaptation. If you've ever loved comic books or simply want a well-written fictional look at 1930s New York, this is a book worth your time to read.

Seems as though the more books Janet Evanovich writes, the more outrageous the situations and characters she comes up with. Unfortunately, there are just too many different outrageous things - and they don't flow together well. There is not enough 'normal' in the books to relate to Stephanie Plum anymore. It seems especially difficult to relate when Diesel is involved in the story - he is supposed to have supernatural powers, but somehow he is just not an enjoyable character. Also, all the short, choppy sentences are a bit distracting to read.

Louis Auchincloss is an extremely prolific writer, yet this is the first book of his I've read - and not to confuse it with Gertrude Stein's Three Lives. Split into - count 'em - three sections, The Epicurean, The Realist and The Stoic. Each protagonist in each section epitomizes the definition of the title. And for some reason, despite being interested in reading Auchincloss, I could not find myself interested in the book. I felt like I wanted to connect to the three main characters, maybe find some interesting shed of their personalities or to be touched by them. But it failed to reach me. I figure that as Auchincloss has written so much fiction, non-fiction and short story collections I should be able to find something worth spending some quality time with. But I'm not in any particular hurry now.

I want to smack that idiotic little twit, Briony, for what she did. I'd love to reach into the pages and throttle her and her stupid parents. I love it when a book evokes such an emotional response in me, even if it's frustrating that I can't do anything to satisfy my venomous urges toward that little brat.

Alaska. It seems I've read a few books recently to do with this frozen and dramatic country (see my glowing review for No Night is Too Long). The Seal Wife is set in frontier Alaska, and follows the story of a young meteorologist and his lovestruck obsession with a native woman in a time and place where women are truly scarce. But reading this was like going to one of those fancy, spare restaurants you know you're supposed to be impressed by, but frankly just leave you hungry and a bit grossed out at the weird combinations you endured in the name of gourmet cuisine. There's a lot of graphic sex and fairly spooky happenings--and yet, she has a way with language and sketches some truly beautiful descriptions of the Alaskan wilderness. But just when the story seems to get meaty and the characters interesting, the book pulls back instead of diving deep. True, Ms. Harrison certainly did a ton of research on early meteorology and frontier Alaska, but I wish she had applied the same diligence to making her characters come alive. They didn't breathe and live for me.

As an atheist, even I find some of Dawkins's anti-religious screeds grating, but that doesn't mean he's wrong, or that the case he presents won't hold up to scrutiny. I'd been through most of these arguments before, but not with all the statistical data to back up my side. Interesting, if occasionally as preachy as those he denounces.

Kind of unimpressive.... I just wasn't really drawn in or hooked. Surprisingly predictable.
I love Hollywood memoirs for the stories of my favorite stars. I learned a lot and will be looking for her stories she tells of writing.
