Dominique Briggs dominiquebriggs — Incredible book with more depth than even Michael Chabon can squeeze into his own movie adaptation. If you've ever loved comic books or simply want a well-written fictional look at 1930s New York, this is a book worth your time to read.

Zen Rahmoun gazman — This was an interesting account of 13 influential bands from the American 80's underground. I appreciated that it tackled a few of the underlying causes surrounding the rise of independent music and I think one of the strongest parts of the book was the way it showed the development of an infrastructure on which indie music continues to build even today. I found it more interesting to learn about the creation of touring circuits by Black Flag and others as well as the labels that promoted these acts than it was to learn about the bands themselves. Ultimately, it left me wondering what the next wave of true independent music will look like. So much has changed in distribution and marketing since the 80's and "indie" has really become a marketable buzz word. I find myself dissatisfied with the culture as of late and almost wish that there was some sort of alternative alternative. At any rate, I'm fascinated by the idea of these bands each finding ways to live on the margins of society in different ways. The writing in the book is often strong, but I think comparatively the book comes off as less engaging than Rip It Up And Start Again, which was a wonderful account of post-punk music in Europe and the US. The latter really makes it a discussion of ideas driving a movement and how those ideas mutate and warp overtime through backlashes and disillusionment. Our Band certainly discusses some of the ideas driving the movement, but I think it often fails to draw parallels between bands in meaningful ways. It also stays more narrowly focused on fewer bands and fewer overall scenes, so the breadth is sometimes lacking. Often it feels like a collection of mini-biographies rather than an outright comprehensive work. That's not a totally fair assessment, but I think it suffers in comparison to Rip It Up. Still a very worthwhile read if you're interested in punk and its aftermath.

Lizzie Bang lizziebang — I love reading how he took the Bible literally. I laughed so much and enjoyed this delightful book. It leaves one thinking, whether you are religious or not. I find it interesting that he now prays and it gives him a sense of peace. What an interesting result. I never was one to like religion, and do believe in God, so I found this book very well thought out. He is obviously very intellectual, and yet curious to do things out of the normal way of doing things. I could never abide by rules!
