This book gave me heavy boots (which is also my favorite new phrase). One of those books that you can't put down but when you do, it's so hard to pick it back up. So sad but I didn't want it to end.

Alright, where to begin? The book starts off fine. Kyle Kingsbury has it all - looks, money, popularity. He's perfect but for one flaw: he’s a total jerk. But everything changes when he invites the weird, ugly girl to a school dance only to take a hot girl instead. The weird girl turns out to be a witch and as punishment turns him into a beast. He has two years to find love or he will remain a beast forever. The good points: Kyle is the narrator and a decent one. I found his teenage male voice to be realistic and fun at times. The author does a good job at adapting a fairy tale to modern times with Kyle even joining a chat group of other 'misfits', a Mr. Anderson leading the discussions (Hans Christian Anderson anyone?). The characters were strong and interesting enough. The bad: The end! Ugh! Too cute and sweet and happily ever after. I know it's a fairy tale but come on! It doesn't have to be ridiculous! Also, Lindy and Kyle almost revert back to their original roles (the one's that they were 'supposed' to have moved on and learned from) with Lindy worshipping Kyle and Kyle absorbing the attention. I guess it makes sense when you realize that the characters start out at 14/15 years old and end at 16/17. Too young! It creeped me out at points. Especially when Kyle considered the possibility of taking a girl and raping her because he could (with his new beastly strength). Yeah, a little too adult for a teen book. It could have been better. A lot better.

This is a fascinating piece of historical fiction about a talented, educated woman, Mamah Boswick and Frank Loyd Wright and their intense love affair in the early 1900s. Both are married with children and familial obligations when they meet and choose a scandolous path with a very high price to be paid as their families slide away from them. Wright is a collosol personality with vision and fierce individualism but that leaves others in his wake. Great read especially through a modern feminist lens about a woman way ahead of her time.

Whoa! This book totally blew my mind, what with time and space and surprise endings. It was a great ending to Josh and Sophie's story.

The affirmations in this book were good, but the book got slightly repetitive. The basic message is that you are not responsible for the person's anger and should not claim to take ownership of it. It had basic good skills on how to deal with verbal abuse whether in a relationship, dealing with children, friends, or co-workers.

I loved the movie, so I am very happy to find I love the book too, without it destroying my love of the movie.

The realism of the characters in this story is due to the restraint and subtlety of McCullers' sketches. Some reviewers have been amazed at the mature picture she painted of this 1930's Southern town when she was only 22 years old. I think her youth kept her honest. For the reader to see from a character's perspective, the reader cannot know more about the character than the character herself. Thus, the author had to be honest about the limits of individual perspective. The essence of the self is the asymmetry of relationships. This leads to identity, but also to loneliness and insecurity. McCullers captures this reality and compresses it into her small cast of players. There is nothing whimsical for a reader who is embodying these characters, but the experience is exhilarating and recalibrating. It makes us grateful for the love we have.

** spoiler alert ** The last of the 3 books from Santiago.. I loved this books like I loved the others. I missed the interactions with her family, but I realize that being with an abusive boyfriend makes for the loneliness that was throughout this book. I was so pleased for her at the end.. and I hope she continues this series.
