It's considered a nonfiction novel but it is also an expository tale about the nature of American violence. The town is all-American, the murdered family is all-American and the class divisions, lack of compassion, and the spirit of revenge are also distinctly American. What's so disturbing about the book is the sympathy you can't help but feel for Perry Smith, who actually fired the shots that killed all four Clutters. It's transmitted through Capote who found somewhat of a demented friendship with Smith. Creepy, engrossing and disturbing but totally worth a read if you're at all interested in violence and retribution.

I listened to the audio version of this book and that could account for it only being three stars. At times I found it to be a little slow going but overall I did enjoy this book. The concept was interesting and I think the title will attract readers. I wasn't aware that families had lived on Alcatraz and I think young readers will find that very interesting. Also, I enjoyed the character of Moose Flanagan and enjoyed learning about him and his relationships about others on the island including his sister. Lastly, I would recommend this book also to those looking for books with a special needs child in them.

I love reading book that take place in an area I am familiar with. This book takes place in the Pacific Northwest with many references to Seattle, Puyallup and other places that are home to me. I also enjoyed the history lesson expanding my knowledge about the Japanese internments camps and what Japanese American citizens went through during world war II. The love story was epic. Two people who are from different worlds (one Japanese and one Chinese) and how they found each other after a lifetime apart. I only wish they would have carried out the ending a little longer.......
