Não seriam necessárias mais de 150 páginas para contar a saga da família Stassos - o livro de Cunningham tem 3 vezes mais que isso. "Laços de Sangue" (título em português) se arrasta numa prolixidade de clichês: o imigrante que constrói um império do zero e torna-se um tirano na família composta por uma mulher problemática (com crises de cleptomania e depressão), uma filha drogada (que acaba contraindo o vírus do HIV e gerando um rebento negro), um filho homossexual (que é a sua versão YMCA) e, por fim, a primogênita com quem vive uma relação incestuosa. Ooops, acho que acabei contando tudo e mais um pouco. Enfim, é novela da Globo escrita por vencedor de Pulitzer. Do mesmo autor, este sim vale muito a pena ler, fico com "As Horas".

At a time when adults thoughts were "children should be seen and not heard", Abraham Lincoln felt very differently.He had a very close relationship with his sons and only wanted the best for them.

A marvellous brief (52 A6 pages) reflective essay on being a migrant, on being New Zealand but once of England, on residing in Hong Kong but not being of Hong Kong, on living elsewhere. Ricketts is better know (to me at least) as a poet, and he brings a poet's sense of language to this piece. Hard to fauilt.

Interesting memoir about a woman whose husband cheated on her and how she came to discover it and deal with the unraveling of her marriage. What keeps the book from being wholly mopey is that the author has a keen awareness of her own faults in both her marriage and in her friendships. She talks often about her own neediness, for example, and she's self-deprecating at times--she's very likable, and as she says, people tell her she writes good emails, so she must be a good writer. Recommended if you want a book that takes, at most, two days to read and has an interesting topic.

I would have never imagined myself reading a book on economics for entertainment, let alone liking one as much as I did this one. I will be rereading it in the future to absorb more. for instance, did you know that "balanced budget initiatives" are a terrible idea? if you read this book, you will be a better voter and a better citizen. aside from how onerous that sounds, it's an enjoyable read. I admit, when I first picked it up, I was unaware that economists could be considered liberals. Those reagan years had an impact.
