I have read this book so many times. Once I start it, I absolutely can't put it down. I started out borrowing it from my library all the time, until finally I found my own copy. It's my favorite book by Avi, who is truly a very gifted storyteller. The book focuses on 13-year-old Charlotte Doyle, making the passage (alone) from England to Providence, Rhode Island, to be reunited with her family. They've taken care of all the arrangements, booking her passage aboard the Seahawk. But from the moment she first steps on board, Charlotte senses that there is danger on the ship. There are secrets, betrayals, murders, and mutinies--all giving this thrilling high seas mystery a spot on the shelf! The characters are very vivid--from Charlotte's quiet friend, Zachariah, to the commanding and cruel Captain Jaggery. Avi spins his magic.

** spoiler alert ** Abhorsen was the best fantasy book I've read, topping even the Twilight saga. It was the best of the Old Kingdom Trilogy. Lirael and Sameth's adventures, and the things they find on the way, were simply amazing. The binding and breaking of Orannis the Destroyer was the best part. When they all took their bells and spoke out and rang them against the Destroyer in turn, and Mogget's identity as Yrael being revealed and his choice to be good sent shivers down my spine and was fabulous. READ IT!

In The Guardians, Ana Castillo insightfully portrays life in the unusual triangle where Sunland Park, NM, El Paso, TX, and Ciudad Juarez come together. The border is in so many ways an artificial construction dividing people and cultures that one could imagine would blend fluidly and happily given political, legal, and law enforcement changes. Instead, families are divided and people are dying trying to cross back and forth. Layer on top of that the appalling drug and gang violence. She accurately describes, if only in passing, very real environmental challenges facing this land of many jurisdictions, from the atrocious pollution historically emitted from the ASARCO smelter to the environmental justice issues in the colonias and the septic system issues that plague many rural areas. The characters are rich and their stories very human.

This book is marketed as "fiction/literature" but it is really a murder mystery in disguise. Told from the daughter's point of view, you meet many characters who might have wanted to kill her mother - an abortionist drowned in her own swimming pool. Along the way, the daughter confronts her own feelings about what her mother did for a living. Those looking for something other than a standard investigational mystery will enjoy the journey.

This book probably deserves more than the three stars I gave it, but I just couldn't get over the creep factor. Martin is a thief who only steals things people won't notice and only after careful research about each particular household's habits. Turns out most people aren't bothered by this, and I might not be either, but the whole time I was reading this book I kept putting myself in the position of Martin's "clients" and imagining him reading my diaries and going through my calendar and basically all of my most personal and private thoughts and possessions. It kept creeping me out and I couldn't get over it, which hindered my enjoyment of the book. I definitely want to read more from this author!

For any fan of C.S. Lewis this delightful intellectual biography walks you not only through the major stages of Lewis's life, but also through the development of his scholarship and thought. Jacobs places Lewis's works in valuable context and highlights many overlooked facets of the man. Jacobs also endeavors to connect the work of Lewis not only to Tolkein but also to many other writers that have come before (MacDonald) and since (Pullman, Rowlings) in the same genre. He even goes so far as to discuss recent film adaptations, and here perhaps strikes a strong note of pop-cultural appeal that sits awkwardly not only with the formality of his own analysis, but also with the self-consciously "old-fashioned" and counter-cultural personality of his subject. Nevertheless, "The Narnian" remains a truly enlightening read that will also revive all one's favorite memories of Lewis's books.

I finished first section of this book last night 3/17/11. Although I just reuturned from five days in the caribbean, with seemingly endless hours to read on the beach, I wasn't anxious to read it, which should tell me something; the "something" being that it's not that good. Descriptions of the initial love making scenes between Isabelle and Stephen are graphic, but those are the only scenes that feel charged with emotion, the rest of it leaves me feeling flat. I may or may not finish this book. UPDATE. I completely changed my mind about this book. The middle section describes a soldier at war and is incredible. The descriptions, while lengthy, get the reader as close to the battlefield as one can possibly be without actually going to war. You live the in the psychological mindset of the soldier, realizing how all encompassing war is and how incredibly difficult it must be when the war is over. It was beautifully written. An epic.
