Mostly a collection of what has already been written, so points off for unoriginality! But I enjoyed the new writings and the author's insights, even though this book is one heavy thing to lug next to your bedside.

I never expected this book to be as scary as it was. One of my favorites by Stephen King.

For fantasy, this wasn't bad at all... even though I had to question a story whose plot devices included a talking cat.

'raise high' is my favorite salinger. bar none. transcendent, even. unfortunately, it's paired with 'seymour', which is more boring than the middle chapters of moby dick that talk about how to use whale blubber.

Good spy thriller. It is set up for a new book at the end. It is in the vain of the best of the Bourne books (I only read the originals not the new ones). I listened to this as an audiobook off of Audible.com and the narration was very good.

Ever since Kiran Desai won the Man Booker Prize in October last year, as the youngest female winner in the award’s 39 year history, I have been wanting to read it. I picked up my paperback copy from Heathrow while flying home for Christmas, but could not find the time. I admit I felt slightly apprehensive, thinking that as a Booker Prize winner it must be a difficult, challenging read. Then the book was chosen as the March title for the SYP Oxford Book Club and I suddenly had both a very good reason and a deadline for reading it. The story is set in Kalimpong in India, far north-east in the Himalayan mountains, near Bhutan and Nepal. I admit I had to look Kalimpong up on a map, as Himalayan geography was never my strongest subject… The story gripped me within a few pages and transported me completely and utterly to a tiny mountain village on the other side of the world. I could vividly imagine the shabby house where Sai, the main character, lives with her grandfather and their cook, the landscape, plants, smells, even the humidity during monsoon season. I have missed reading stories like this! The book gets under your skin, and it made me feel angry, sad, annoyed and nostalgic as the story progressed. The haunting loneliness that permeates the family lineage of all the characters, the extreme poverty and widespread injustice, the Nepalese insurgency – uncomfortable to read about but necessary for understanding the culture and history where the story is set. It’s been several days since I finished the book but the story won’t let go, it’s playing on my mind and has inspired me to read more about India, West Bengal, Darjeeling and the conflicts in this area. Warmly recommended!

this book deserves a 5/rating... but I can't do that. perhaps it is me but it took me three attempts with the actual book until I finally gave in and bought the audio book. and even then it took me two tries got get past the beginning. it was my first attempt at Sanderson and I didn't know what to expect aside from a rave from my buddy. each time the main character would get to Elantris... I would shut it down. it was so dreary...such a downer. Then I would read another of Brandon's books, realize or be reminded of his genius in creating worlds and magic systems. so,/thus reminded I would restart Elantris and... get a few extra pages further... only to fail again. I have since read Mistborn Warbreaker Rithmatist Steel heart Fire Fight and the way of Kings and in between each (it seemed)/I would return to Elantris for another try. Finally I have finished it and once again glad I persevered. I have come to love Raodin and Serene. So what was my problem? Normally, we see the magic and the wonder right from the start... and it is the conflict that our heroes face that sets the stage. in Elantris... the lack of magic and the mystery of what happens to Raodin is the story and we have got to slog through the proverbial elantrian muck to realize and feel for what is accomplished by the end of the novel. So. why Four stars? Even though I believe we needed this journey I think we could have a tad bit more foreshadowing early on. Perhaps get to know the main character more before he changes. the first chapters are so bleak...and really without hope ...ultimately this was its flaw. please don't let it deter you. it us a wonderful story... hang in there long enough and you will be rewarded.

This is on my top 10 list of books that I absolutely adore. It took me just a few days to read it ~ and for me, that is the sign of an amazing story. Read this book, you WILL NOT be disappointed.
