My daughter and I went to the book signing for this book by the author of Flipped (and many others). My 12 yo read it in 2 nights and I read it in the next 3. Very moving story about a teen track star who is in an accident and has to have her leg amputated.

My least favorite of Dickens' work.

Much like Moon Tiger, I thought it was ok, but not great. If you like to pontificate/philosophize about art then give it a try. But even then it kind of falls flat.

Solid writing, crazy story. It never ceases to amaze me how wacko people often have such stellar offspring. I liked how Walls never lapsed into self-pity or an easy explanation for why her parents were the way they were. Life, and people, are complicated.

My least favorite of her novels (that I've read) - too unfocused for my taste.
A medieval nun and a mercenary. A Japanese glass blower and a farm boy. An Italian iron monger and his wife. A Viking warrior and an orphan. A Victorian society lady and a farmer. A severely burned pornographer and a schizophrenic sculptress. Love that endures through the centuries. When a beautiful, drug-abusing adult film star is severely burned in a freak car accident, his charred outer body finally mirrors the cynical soul within. Laying in his hospital bed devising his own suicide, the last thing he expects is to be visited by a fellow patient who claims to have been his lover in medieval Germany. Marianne Engel persists in bringing him tales of their history together, until his yearning for death is replaced by the blossoming of quite a different feeling in his pain-wracked soul. Covering hundreds of years and thousands of miles, Marianne Engel's tales of love's adversity and redemption help the unnamed narrator's soul to heal in a way his body never could. A fascinating choice for book clubs, The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson delves deep into the natures of love and the soul. I listened to this book in the car, but found I had to avoid times when the kids were around, as there is a great deal of graphic and explicit language.

nice bio about the former sectary of denfense. Democrats would hate it.

Oh, this was awesome! This true story of 3 generations of women in China is as searing as any novel, and validates all the novels I've read about 20th century China, but it is in a category of its own! Chang's writing is excellent, and breathtaking when you consider that she learned English as an adult. So much heartbreak, persecution, and suffering, and yet the will to survive, to be an honorable person, and not allow bitterness to destroy the spirit are clear on every page. At 508 pages, I confess it took me months to finish, but it was definitely worth the effort!

I love this book! From page 1, I was hooked! The book really moves along. It has a great plot. It's steampunk, so of course I like it. The author doesn't use a bunch of frilly language, like many of the books I've read lately. There is always something happening, and I couldn't put it down. I also like that it shows how class relationships were in the Victorian era. I can't wait to read 'Liberator'.
