This is my all time favorite book. It also cemented McEwan's tie for the coveted favorite author spot. McEwan has an enchanting voice in all of his books, but none so much as this one. The fact that the book's three sections do not occur in chronological order is used to great affect. While this kind of thing can come off as "gimmicky" in certain contexts, McEwan employs the technique with such skill, that it becomes essential to the telling of the story. I was swept away by this book. Quite frankly, I'm not sure I've ever returned.

Devastating critique of the U.S. Many readers already admire Kevin Phillips’s previous books, with their incisive analysis of U.S. politics. In this treatise, published just before the 2008 presidential election, his main concerns are the dangerous dominance of the financial sector in the U.S. economy and the fiscal implications of peak oil. Phillips covers many other hazards, from securitization to the real estate bubble. He provides historical background to explain modern financial circumstances, whacks both the Bush and Clinton administrations, and offers his take on everything from imperial England to the efficient market hypothesis. After he explains how and why the U.S. is teetering dangerously on the brink of disaster, getAbstract is relieved to report that Phillips also offers some ideas about how it might rescue itself by going back to strong manufacturing, solid education and better regulations. This seems to be a fairly hasty overview of bad times, but the author can see beyond the immediate storm to the possibility of a brighter day.

I really liked this book but the ending, out of principle, pissed me off. Overall it was a good read and I enjoyed it.

FINALLY finished this monster that I've wanted to read for 7 years. John Adams is my hero, you guys. He's pretty much the perfect historical figure. Forthright, upstanding, lovably funny, and his personal life stands up to all the scrutiny you can throw at it. What a great man. If only he was running for President this year . . .

My favorite part of this book is the "Two-Penny Hangover." There are passages very similar to Crane's "Maggie: A Girl Of The Streets", obviously because of the subject matter but also because of the stylistic vividness of actually having lived in such a state. Also, the bits of dish washing for a living, and accounts of restaurant work, in particular, are remarkable. I would rather read about Orwell's Paris over Hemingway's any day. Not to knock Papa, though.

Not Crichton's best. Published after his death and I'm sure this is one of his early manuscripts. Truly. It's not a bad story, but it doesn't have Crichton's voice. It's a good look for a writer as to why you don't publish everything you write

The Guardian 3 Stars When visiting a soothsayer, four young highland boys receive prophecies of their future brides. Ian MacDonald is told that he will marry twice - once for hate and once for love. Years later he is forced to wed a childhood friend and deserts her to fight in France. Upon his return, he discovers that gangly Síleas has become a beautiful and spirited young woman with little patience for a man who chose war over hearth and home. Is it too late for Ian to prove his love for her? Ian has to be one of the most self-centered, obnoxious and irritating heroes ever to disgrace the pages of a historical romance novel. He returns home and expects the woman he deserted to welcome him with open arms and kiss the ground he walks on . . . Well, he is in for a big surprise! Síleas is a charming heroine - beautiful, caring and independent. The only problem with her character is her love for the undeserving Ian. It seems that love truly is blind…and deaf … and stupid! The rest of the plot revolving around a struggle for leadership of the Clan is well developed with some exciting action scenes. Unfortunately, it never quite succeeds in compensating for the weak romance. The rest of the series focuses on the other boys: Alex the womanizer, Duncan the tormented and Connor the leader. As their characters are far more likable than Ian, I am willing to give their books a chance.
