A baby elephant whose mother was slaughtered by poachers for ivory,shipped to America for sale as who knows what, bought out of pitty by a rancher that had been THE Marlboro Man, saved from dying, and was raised to be a friendly companion to Bob, the owner of the T Cross ranch just south of Colorado Springs gives the basis of this fascinating book. A must read to find the ending!

Samuel Torres _ammycovisd1d0 — The third instalment was so disappointing! I am heartbroken that the series took such a downward turn after such a great beginning. The first book Poison Study, was by far the best of the series. After finishing it, I thought this series would easily become one of my favourites. Then I read Magic Study and I’m thinking “Hmmmm…. This is good but not quite as good as I was expecting”. Following Yelena’s life as a magician’s student/ apprentice was interesting, but not as enthralling as her life as a Poison Taster in Ixia. I then read the third book, praying it would redeem the series. Sadly it didn’t, it just made it worse. So the third book follows Yelena on her quest for revenge (Am I right? I may not be, because by page 50 of the book, I didn’t really care where the characters were going or what would happen in the end). That is REALLY sad, hey? Usually with series you are just dying to know how everything ends up and resolves itself. By the end of this series I couldn’t care less. I went from being utterly obsessed over Yelena and Valek (in addition to all of the other more minor characters), to not caring at all! Something clearly went wrong with the storytelling. As a few others have pointed out, the book is called Fire Study, so I thought I was safe to assume that she would be learning a new skill or something would be happening… perhaps to do with fire!?! But to my knowledge, this didn’t happen. Instead, the third book was just a really reaaaaally long, drawn out continuation of Magic Study. Come on! Couldn’t something new and exciting have happened? By the end I was sick to death of the story. The most annoying factor for me was Yelena and Valek’s relationship, as I pointed out in my review of Magic Study. Ugh!! Talk about a let down! Nothing developed between them after book 1! You didn’t see their relationship blossom or fall apart or frankly do much at all. There needed to be some sort of development, but there wasn’t. They just went along being happy happy, seeing each other now and then and that was it. All of the emotions between the characters that we saw in Book 1 were completely neglected in Books 2 and 3. *Sigh* I am just so disappointed! I will continue to recommend Poison Study to people, but will probably advise for them to stop there.
