I would not have finished this book had it not been a group read. It started off OK, and the story is an intriguing one. But the author used trite, cliche ridden prose that was really hard to accept. She belabored descriptions, seemingly only to fill pages. There were more generations than seemed necessary to tell the story, and she jumped around too frequently. It's really too bad, because the nucleus of the story was quite good.

This is one of my all-time favorite books, and probably my favorite Clive Barker read, just barely edging out its hefty competition ("Great and Secret Show" of course). I read this book in one day and savored every moment of it. The story is that a young boy is bored on a lazy afternoon, so hestarts seeking out an adventure in a strange house surrounded in mystery and intrigue, and finds himself in a nightmare. He quickly discovers that though he can have anything he desires there, he can't leave, and time moves differently there. Surrounded by monsters and lost souls, this is one of the best twisted fairytales one can find! If you like the original Grimm Fairy Tales (not the Disney-fied versions) and enjoy a good page turner, this is definitely the book for you.

I am very glad that J.K Rowling’s, Harry Potter series has remained on my bookshelf all of these years.
